Rome's POV:
Three days had gone by since we arrived in Damesville. I had assumed that the days spent here would be lackluster, uneventful, and anything else you can use to describe complete boringness. But I was severely wrong, Mrs. Flouris had us up early in the morning, and asleep late at night. My sleep schedule struggled heavily and there were certain occasions where I felt I would pass out over the breakfast table.
Currently seated at the dinner table I waited for Mrs. Flouris and surprisingly Zeke to serve us our meal, he had offered himself up to help with the preparations when he noticed how badly I just needed to nap.
I was scared though... When I thought of Zeke, I didn't think of anyone who could cook.
Turning my head I made eye contact with Kate who had taken a small break from scribbling furiously in her notebook, bringing her homework to the dining table. She worked harder than I ever did in school and it was really admirable.
"Kate," Mrs. Flouris scolded, "Your homework can take a fifteen-minute break while we eat dinner."
Kate sighed, reluctantly setting down her pencil and shoving everything back into her bookbag. She turned to me and whispered lowly while her mother set the table and her father stared at her doing so.
"Some parents would have kids skip dinner to do homework, and I get scolded for it."
I scrunched my eyebrows, "Your health is more important than any piece of schoolwork, Kate."
We had gotten much closer than I had expected we would've. One day she had come back with a history project she had no idea how to start so I offered my help, and since then I guess we've become friends of some sort.
She sighed, "My health can wait until I graduate."
I shook my head, "That's not a good mindset."
She opened her mouth to speak but was cut off by Zeke slapping a mound of Mac N' Cheese down on her plate.
We both stared at the bright orange color in shock before glancing up to him, with our mouths wide open.
"What?" He questioned, holding the pot in his hands, casually leaning it against his hips. "It's a family recipe."
He slapped some on my plate and I eyed it carefully, "Zeke... I think you've created a new color."
Choosing to ignore what I said, he sat down next to me while Kate laughed at my joke. I smiled at her and picked up my fork and pierced through the cheesy mound. I brought it to my lips and took a bite of it, turning my head I saw Zeke observing me.
"What?" I asked after I swallowed it down.
He narrowed his eyes, "How's it taste?"
"Like cheese," I answered, before taking another bite.
The lot of us began munching down on his creation, it wasn't too bad but it wasn't exactly the best.
Small talk passed through the table, I brought up the weather seeing as it was a great conversation starter while Zeke laughed quietly.
The conversation went from the weather to Zeke and me, and what our lives were like before we came here. I quickly created a boring story about us being a brother-sister duo who wanted to see what the world had to offer.
"So, this house..." I started, setting down my fork. "When was it built?"
Mrs. Flouris took another bite before looking at her husband, "Oh geez," She started, "I would like to say somewhere around 1830?" She looked at her husband for confirmation to which he just shrugged.
