When Gingerpaw woke up, she realized the only apprentices in the den were Fuzzypaw, Lightpaw, and Darkpaw.
Where are the others? She wondered.
She got to her paws and stretched before walking out of the den, blinking her eyes to adjust to the morning light.
She saw Wolfrunner lying in the shade, eating a squirrel, and she padded over to join him.
"Hey Gingerpaw." Wolfrunner said, looking up at her. "You're up early."
Gingerpaw sat down and licked her paw, drawing it over her face. "Yeah, I was wondering where the other apprentices went though?"
Wolfrunner turned back to his meal. "They're in the middle of their warriors assessments today."
Gingerpaw's eyes widened. "Really? I hope they do well!"
"Hopefully not Clawpaw." Wolfrunner growled. "He's not fit to be a warrior, let alone a decent apprentice."
Gingerpaw rested her tail on his shoulder. "I know he's sometimes difficult, but he can be a good warrior when he wants to be. Just give him another chance, just like I am."
Wolfrunner's gaze softened. "I guess you're right, but I can't forget what he did to Bouncefrost."
"You don't have to forget, you just have to look past that and see the good in him." Gingerpaw mewed.
Before Wolfrunner could reply, Bluefeather trotted up to them, her eyes bright.
"Wolfrunner!" She stopped in front of him, sitting down, quickly glancing at Gingerpaw. "I hope I'm not interrupting, but I just wanted to thank you for your help."
Wolfrunner nodded, and Gingerpaw couldn't help but feel a little jealous; but why?
"How's your wound?" Wolfrunner asked.
"It's much better! Snowleaf is a great healer!" Bluefeather exclaimed.
"We actually call her a medicine cat." Gingerpaw corrected, and it came out more rudely than she wanted it to be.
"Gingerpaw, she probably doesn't know much about clan life." Wolfrunner pointed out calmly.
Gingerpaw lashed her tail. "Enough to have a clan name though!"
"Great StarClan! Why are we even fighting over this!?" Wolfrunner hissed.
"I don't know, maybe because you're putting too much trust in a cat we barely know anything about?!" Gingerpaw hissed back.
Bluefeather awkwardly coughed. "Look, you guys look like good friends and I don't want you to fight because of me. I'll just talk to Wolfrunner at a different time."
She walked away before anyone could answer, and Wolfrunner shot Gingerpaw a frustrated glare.
"What was that about?!" He questioned.
Gingerpaw looked down. She didn't mean for this to happen. "I'm really sorry, Wolfrunner. Can you forgive me?"
Wolfrunner's fur lyed flat again, but he still seemed angry. "Not until you can prove to me that you can trust Bluefeather."
Gingerpaw opened her mouth to protest but Wolfrunner interrupted.
"Understand?" Wolfrunner's gaze was stern.
Gingerpaw growled. "I understand."
"Now go find Leapfrost, I'm sure he's looking for you." Wolfrunner looked towards her mentor, who was standing besides Breezetail, Redclaw, and Doeheart. Her denmates were with them.
"Okay, see you later then." Gingerpaw murmured, walking over to Leapfrost.
How was she supposed to trust a cat that shouldn't be trusted? And how could Wolfrunner be foolish enough to trust Bluefeather in the first place?
But Gingerpaw knew one thing for sure; something as silly as this shouldn't get in the way of their friendship, and if Wolfrunner would only forgive her if she started trusting Bluefeather, then she would find a way to trust this cat.
