--12 years later--
17-year-old Angelica Whittier didn't notice the envelope on her table at first. In fact, the parcel went unnoticed until she set a steaming mug of coffee on the table the next morning. It was a perfectly white envelope, nearly iridescent in its whiteness. It had a wax seal imprinted with a stylized A, the wax of which it was made seeming to go through the entire spectrum of colors with every which way it reflected light. Of course, this was normal for Angie, seeing more colors than the...well, the "normal" humans saw.
Ever since she was 5 years old, Angie had been different from other people. Ever since the car crash, she eventually learned. Poor Angie lost her father and brother that day. But it's what she gained that held equal importance. Her affected sight allowed her to see colors that nobody else saw. Everything was brighter and better, like Wonderland. Colors that were seen as "neon" to humans appeared as a whole series of sporadic, vibrant colors, like a TV censor screen. Some colors were even accompanied with soft instrumentals or curious tastes. The same happened with music; with each tone, each heartwarming melody, came a visual display of color. Angie grew up with a spark of curiosity unlike that of anyone else because of her abilities. And she didn't realize it, but on that day 12 years ago, her normally sky-blue eyes became a vibrant cerulean that sparkled like a tropical ocean.
At first, she had no idea what was happening to her. The doctors sent her off with a diagnosis of synesthesia, but something told her that it was more than that. She didn't quite know what "more" meant. Maybe she was about to find out.
Angie broke the seal, not entirely accustomed to receiving mail with wax seals - or mail whatsoever, for that matter. From the envelope, she took a paper just like any other letter. When she let the envelope drop to the table, she noticed that it was indeed addressed to her, her name and address there in plain ink. No return address, though.
Huh.
Interesting, Angie thought, her heart starting to speed up as she unfolded the paper. You'd think she was running an Olympic race, the way her nerves were building up. But, despite her hopes, the paper was blank.
Except for a single button. A button like the ones found at Newbury Comics or Hot Topic. It was nearly an exact replica of the seal of the letter: a rainbow-shaded, carefully-shaped letter A that shone like the back of a DVD. Angie was obviously confused; What did this mean? Maybe she'd find out eventually. Her curiosity getting to her, she unhooked the button from the paper. The way it shone, even in the dull light of her New York apartment, was magical. But she didn't know just how magical it would turn out to be.
