Chapter 42 [Father and Son]
~~~~~
But it wasn't dedication to his father's work that drove Jason to work so tirelessly. Seto understood that much, but he didn't understand what made Jason tick they way he did. It befuddled him, but what he did know was Jason had committed a crime unexpected of the overly cheerful and kind child he imagined Jason being.
Was this what Jason had meant when Jason said that one day he would be at a disadvantage because of his curse. He couldn't understand why Jason did was he did, he didn't understand what emotions had pushed him to such an extent.
Seto quietly tread across the rain soaked ground, his staff raised slightly with a thin film of magic acting as an umbrella. He extended it over Jason who stood quietly watching the funeral procession proceed in the distance.
Jason turned his head to him, "Hey Seto," he smiled quietly but Seto didn't acknowledge him.
Jason turned back around and stayed silent. Seto didn't know what Jason was thinking, but his silence bothered him. Seto muttered under his breath, it was so quiet he didn't think Jason would hear him make any noise.
"What did you say?"
Seto repeated himself, but louder; "How did your father die?"
Jason stiffened, "You performed the investigation, you should already know..."
"Yes, I know, but I want you to tell me. How did he die?" Seto stepped in front of Jason and looked him in the eyes calmly.
Jason's mouth trembled and his eyes shifted to the ground. What did it mean? Seto searched Jason's face, he was trying to understand. What was Jason feeling? What was he trying to say?
Seto remembered something from a long, long time ago. He believes it was his mother that once told him that the eyes were the windows to a person's soul. With enough practice people could understand each other's core and the closer a person was to the other they could even hear the inner most thoughts of the other.
It was ridiculous, Seto knew that, but he wondered then if he and Jason were close. Could he, hypothetically, hear what Jason was saying with his eyes, could he see what kind of person he was and what kind of person he wanted to be?
Jason looked back up into Seto's eyes, Seto realized then how drenched Jason really was. From his head to his toes his clothing stuck to him and his hair dripped rain water down his face. It almost disguised his tears, almost.
Seto's free hand reached up towards Jason's head but he stopped midway. What was he trying to do just then? Seto put his hand back down and looked across the muddy expanse of land.
"You have such poor form," the wretched Ender woman chuckled, "It's almost a pity that my first opponent is someone as weak as you."
Seto spat at the ground and deflected a blow as the Ender struck him at his side. The sound of their swords clanging pounded through his ears. He was never a close combat fighter, he hated the unnecessary struggle.
Seto needed to make some distance, that was where his true strengths lay.
Seto teleported a safe distance away and huffed as he began to feel the effects of the amount of magic he was using. He took a step back to catch himself as a light dizzy spell overcame him.
