A vicious wind whipped my hair against my face with a stinging force that would leave my skin tender and chapped for days. It cut through my denim jacket and left me chilled to the bone. It was only September and already the threads of winter were weaving themselves into Oregon's air. I could almost taste the decay creeping into the leaves of trees and bushes. The land around me felt wild and I felt wild, too.

Coming back to my grandfather's land in Imnaha always did that to me. It awakened what was feral and untamed within me. The beast that waited beneath my flesh paced with anticipation to be released. Soon it would turn to need, and the beast, the wolf that I truly was, would begin to desperately claw its way into the world--with or without my consent. It had waited long enough.

There was a familiar presence approaching behind me. I recognized its scent long before its arrival. A shiver that wasn't due to the wind ran down my body as I turned around, my chilled hands shoved in my jacket pockets. Only a few yards away, there stood a large, golden wolf with a face marred by a jagged scar that ran from forehead to muzzle. One of its ears had a newer scar since I'd seen him last — small tear to the left ear. Either way, I would recognize the wolf anywhere.

Minutes passed as we stood there glaring at each other. His golden eyes never left mine but I knew he was studying me, sizing me up from when we last saw each other. There was nothing threatening about this encounter, but the tension was great nonetheless. Although I had seen him around from time to time, it had been years since our last interaction--three to be exact.

The silence had gone on long enough. I lowered my gaze, toed the dirt.

"I miss him, too, you know. More than you think," I said, quietly. The wolf simply huffed, causing me to roll my eyes. A gust of wind blew between us, his fur rustled with it. "I came here to let you know that I'm leaving tomorrow. I'm not sure yet where I'll go. I just...I can't keep on like this." The wolf's amber eyes were still trained on me. "I feel I owe you a heads up. Although," I paused with narrowed eyes, "I'm not sure why." Still met with silence, I shook my head bitterly. "Bye."
