Gilbert's POV:

I had just walked into the schoolhouse and set my stuff down when Anne walked in. She looked strange. Tired almost, without the usual light in her eye. She looks almost as if she's been crying. I hope she's okay. I thought glancing over at her as she slowly sat down in her seat.

Anne's POV:

I was beyond tired. All I wanted was for this day to be over. As I sat down, I could feel the eyes of someone on me. I looked behind and saw Gilbert making no effort to pretend like he wasn't looking at me. I quickly looked back, and started setting up my school stuff. As I was taking out my books, I feel a slight tap on my shoulder.

I look over and see Gilbert crouching next to me. Has he learned nothing from crouching next to my desk?

"Hey, Anne," Gilbert said looking straight into my eyes, "Are you alright?"

God, I knew it. Someone would notice, and of course, it would be Gilbert Blythe.

"I'm fine. I don't need your concern." I said with a bit of venom in my mouth, instantly regretting it and cringing. I could see almost a mask of hurt flash across his face. My cheeks instantly flushed a bright red, and I looked down.

I thought maybe he would be upset or mad at me, but instead, he picked up my chin, looked me right in the eyes, and said in almost a whisper, "I don't believe that." If my face wasn't red already.

I wasn't really sure what to say. "Really. I'm fine." I said jerking away from his touch.

I could tell he wanted to say something, but the teacher walked in, so he went back to his desk.

I had walked back home taking the scenic route to admire all of the autumn leaves falling from the trees, my hair blending with all the colors around as the wind blew the ends of my dress around.

I had just gotten back to Green Gables when I saw Jerry working in the fields. "Good morning, Anne." He said cheerfully.

"Good morning, Jerry," I said trying my best to match his cheerful tone.

"How was school?" He asked curiously listening with full interest. I couldn't help but let out a small chuckle.

"Well, it was...alright. Here, I picked up some extra assignments that I thought we would work on together." I said showing him some of the extra work I picked up. This had become somewhat of a regular routine for us. When the teacher wasn't looking, I would figure out what my assignments were, and pick up some for Jerry so that he would still have the ability to learn.

"Thank you!" He said taking them from me. "And here. For you." He said handing me a piece of paper. "I practiced the alphabet," He said proud, and I couldn't help but share the same sense of pride in him.

"Well, I better go off and help Marilla with the chores, and then we can work on your lessons. All right?" I asked looking back at him.

"Yeah!"

I walked back inside and helped Marilla wash and chop potatoes for dinner trying my best to keep my mind busy to not fall back in that dark place.
