Moyinoluwa, Age 16.Funny how last year when I entered the school gates, people used to laugh and whisper. But now, well they are looking shocked and surprised.
During the summer holiday, I went on a diet, reducing fat foods. I even became a member of the gym, my mom and I. I made sure I got rid of the rolls on my stomach and the love handles. Now I won't say I'm thin like the rest of the girls but my body is way better than theirs.
As I walked through the halls, all eyes were on me, including the teachers that were passing by. They were whispering all right, some things never change. I wasn't ready to listen to them so I walked as fast as I could to my classroom. I sighted Mary in the middle of the class, on her seat reading a book. Same old Mary. That's one the things we both have in common.
I walked up to her "Mary what's up?" she dropped the book and looked up.
"Babe, I dey oo. Did they see you?" She asked. This girl is very funny, how won't they see me.
"Of course they did. It's like I have a sign on my forehead saying 'look at me', but nobody insulted me so that's a progress." I told her. Mary knew about my weight loss because she helped me during the holiday. She joined me on the exercises and diets, I'll be forever grateful to her. Mary has a great body. She isn't thin and she isn't big but she has killer curves. The workouts made her look better.
"If anybody should try rubbish, give them their size. Don't let them put you down. You might think I'm saying nonsense or I'm disturbing you but it's for your sake. You're a beautiful girl and I'm proud of you for taking up this new step in your life. " Mary told me. I felt tears in my eyes.
"Thank you so much. You're the best." I hugged her while sitting - which wasn't comfortable.
The Government teacher entered the class with his lesson note. "Good morning class, settle down please. Thank you. I want to welcome you back to school. This is the beginning of a new session and in a few months you're going to start your external exams. You all need to be very serious with your studies. The results of the exams will be the first step to your future so you need to work extra hard. Don't waste time and don't depend on anyone. "
"Thank you sir." We all said.
"So, for this period we are going to be looking at the topic Nationalism. Someone should please define Nationalism to the class. "
...............................
"Ugh! Can't they reduce the duration of the periods? I almost slept off in that class" Mary complained. She always does that but I'm used to it.
"You're talking like you've not been in this school since JSS1. Nawa for you oo."
"That doesn't mean I'll get used to it. Let me shut up before you'll beat me."
"I'm going to the cafeteria, are you coming or not?" I asked Mary.
"yeah, let me put my books in my bag." I waited for her. "Let's go."
I prefer buying my food during short break because it's always less crowded. People prefer to gist during short break which is okay since the cafeteria isn't crowded.
"Ehn ehn, I heard there's a new student " Mary told me.
"In our class?" I asked. Now that I think of it, that was a stupid question. Before she replied, I said "Sorry, if the person wasn't in our class you won't bother telling me".
"Good. He's in science class but he's resuming tomorrow or the day after " Mary said.
"Okay. What are you buying?" I asked.
"Maybe Pepsi and Hobnobs or Gala. You nko?"
"Pepsi and rice. Let me eat good food today or should I buy biscuit with it? "
"It's your choice but instead of Pepsi buy water, that's better."
"Okay. Walk fast, I'm hungry." I said.
"Calm down ahn, the food is not running away. Babe, wait na!"
