Chapter 6

Turns out my mum just wanted to ask about how school was. I told her it was good, no trouble from anyone.

My mom has always been concerned about my school hours due to the constant bullying but it's going to stop because I won't take anything from anybody. I can't keep living my life in fear.

Going to the bathroom, I hear my mom whistling. She's probably getting breakfast ready. My dad might be downstairs too or on his way to work. I quickly took my bath and got dressed in my room. After that, I went to the kitchen to see that my mom had already finished making breakfast.

I went to the dinning room to see my parents eating already. There is an extra plate of noodles and boiled egg. As I got closer, I knelt down to greet them.

"E karo (good morning). Shey daada le sun? (hope you slept well?) " My dad patted me on the back.

"Karo omo mi, daada la sun (morning my child, we slept well) " They both replied. They like it when I speak Yoruba to them. They always tell me to speak my native language, it's helps not to forget where I'm coming from.

"How was your night? " My mom asked. I replied telling her  it was okay.

We continued breakfast with small talks until my dad checked the time and said we have to leave to avoid traffic. I gathered the plates and cups to the kitchen and quickly washed them. I carried my school bag from the couch and went to my mom's car. My dad has left already.

15 minutes later, we are school's gate. My mom hands a 500 Naira note to me and tells me to have a nice day in school. I kiss her on the cheeks and hop out of the car.

"Good morning class. Welcome back to school. Half of this term we're going to be analysing the literary text 'Last Good Man' by Patience Swift. I'm sure some of you have read it but for the sake of those that haven't, let's start from the beginning. "

Mrs Kuti starts talking about the text and Mary decides this is the right time to call me.

"Psst. What's up? " She asked grinning. This is the third time she has asked this morning.

"Are you sure there's nothing wrong with you today? This is the third time you're asking me that question. " Thankfully, Mrs Kuti is facing the board now so she can't see us.

First period was Mathematics which I tried very hard to listen to but didn't understand everything, just a little bit of it. Second period was English which was better. And now third period is Literature.

I don't have a favourite subject but I'll say I'm better in Literature than any other subject. But when it comes to Poetry, I'm not so good.

"Nothing is wrong with me. I'm just greeting you. I missed you. " Mary replied me, still grinning.

"Are you sure? Or you're just bored. You're probably... " I got interrupted by the teacher.

"Mary and Moyin, would you like to share your discussion with the class? " Mrs Kuti looks like she's about to kill us so I quickly get up from my seat and pull Mary up also.

"Ma, we were just talking about how excited we are to read this wonderful book called Last Good Man by the marvellous author Patience Swift. " Mary spoke up first, saving me from thinking of an explanation.

"That means you must have read one of her books. Why don't you name one for the class. " Mrs Kuti replied trying to test Mary.

"Ma? I didn't tell you I have read one of her books. " Mary looked confused, frowning a little bit.

"You called her a marvellous author. That means you must have read one of her books. " Seeing the look on Mary's face, she gave up. "Just sit down, the both of you. Don't let me catch you talking again. "

"Thank you ma. " We both said and sat down. I gave Mary a warning look and continued listening to the teacher.

There's just five minutes left to the end of the class and Mrs Kuti decides to give us an assignment.

It's not really an assignment because we just have to read the text and analyse it during the next class. That should be fun.
