Milo
As I chomped on my peanut butter toast that morning, I thought about school and wondered if all of it was worth it. A couple of weeks had passed since Riley violently pinned me up against the wall. Ever since then, Riley had been harassing me day after day. When I took a year off of high school, usually I would only talk to people like him once in a blue moon and then never see them again. Having to face this prejudice every day was draining my energy. I
reminded my self of the positives of school. I wouldn't have my Grandma teaching me.Even though she was possibly the sweetest person on the planet, teaching wasn't her strongest suit. First of all, all she had learned in school was kinda different from how I learned it. Then, if she finally understood the concepts, she would try to explain them to me. Somehow, after she tried to teach me, I was more confused than I was when I started! Also, I would be able to learn to socialize with more people. When I first became blind, a year ago, all my friends stopped talking to me, one by one. I after a while I became more and more antisocial. I barely went outside at that time. My grandma was the one who noticed first. She's the main reason I'm going to school. My Mom's not around enough to see and my sister is already moved out with her husband and child so I never see her anymore.
My grandma is the only one who is really there for me. She knew I was acting differently around people and told my Mom it was time for me to go to real school. At first, I was terrified to go back. High school had been hard enough when I could see. I'm happy she forced me to go though. Otherwise, I wouldn't have met Kira! Kira and I had gotten closer in these couple of weeks. She had become closer to me than any of my previous friends had. She was one of the sweetest people I had ever met. She actually cared about how I felt. She didn't smother me or leave me in the dark. My mind went back to when we went out last week to her favorite coffee shop.
"My Mom's working tomorrow," I said to her, the day before, "and my grandma is going to this tea party with her friends. I can't stay by self so that means I have to go with her. Bleh."
"If you want you can hang out with me!" She offered, "I don't have much going on. I can take you to the best coffee shop in the city."
"I don't know. Catching up on old lady gossip is pretty fun. Last week, my grandma's friend, Agnes, won the bingo tournament by cheating."
Kira giggled, giving me a warm and fuzzy feeling.
"That actually sounds way better, though."
To be honest, I had never really liked coffee. It tasted gross and just made me crash after the caffeine wore off. I just wanted to hang out with Kira.
My grandma dropped me off out front the next day, where Kira was waiting for me. She lead me to a table near the front and read the menu to me.
"What do you want?" She asked, getting up to go order.
"Um," I mumbled, not knowing what any of the fancy names meant, "I'll have what you're having."
"Ok."
She left and I wondered what she would get. I knew I probably wouldn't like it though. I wanted to seem mature around her so I didn't get a hot chocolate or tea or anything. I heard her footsteps as she came back to the table.
"Here it is."
I handled the drink cautiously. It smelled chocolatey and I could feel the steam coming from the top. I took a sip, preparing for the bitter taste of coffee, but was met with the sweet taste of hot chocolate.
"Oh," I said, sounding relieved, "this is...delicious!"
"Yay," she cheered, clapping her hands, "I know it's not coffee but it still tastes amazing! I've never really been a coffee person myself."
