Milo
I sat in the principals' office, squeezing the life out of my armrests. My Mom was in the seat next to me. I pictured her with her long black hair and fierce blue eyes, tapping her tan fingers on the chair impatiently. She was always restless and had somewhere to go.
"The rest of them should be here any minute now," assured the principal, Mrs. Woods, "Thank you, for your patience."
My Mom didn't respond. Tension filled the room. My heartbeat faster with every tick of the clock. When I told Grandma and Mom about what happened, my Mom was furious, threatening to get Riley expelled.
"That is bullying! That is discrimination!" She shouted, "I'm calling your principal right now to meet first thing tomorrow. That boy deserves a strict punishment!"
"Wait a minute," my Grandma interrupted with her honey-sweet voice, "Jen, take a deep breath. You don't want to act rashly out of anger. I agree that you should meet with the principal and get this issue sorted but you need to calm down first."
"How can I calm down? My own son's been bullied nonstop for the past month!"
"I wouldn't go that far," I muttered, knowing that she was right.
"Milo," she said in her disappointment voice, "why didn't you tell me sooner?"
I stayed silent. I didn't want her to know the real reason I didn't tell her. The truth was I wanted to do something for myself for once. Being blind, I depend on other's help for mostly everything. For once, I wanted to be in control. My Mom was very protective of me. She didn't want me to go back to school in the first place. My grandma was the one to finally convince her. She never let me be in control. She wouldn't understand.
"I don't know," I said, hanging my head low.
I could feel her eyes piercing into me. My Mom had a way of staring that even though I couldn't see her, I could tell.
"I don't want you at school if this is what's going to happen. Maybe you should..."
"No!" I exclaimed, getting up from my seat, "Yes, I have been bullied for the past month but being at school has been one of the best things to happen to me since the accident! You can't take me away please!"
"I'm just trying to do what is best for you, Milo."
"If you paid attention to me, you would know that it would be better if I stayed!"
"Milo..."
"He's right, Jen," Grandma interrupted, "I haven't seen him this happy since the accident. He's made a good friend. There are bullies everywhere but Milo needs to be around kids his age!"
"Well," Mom said, putting her hand on my shoulder, "We'll see how the meeting goes. I want to meet everyone who was involved. Then I'll make my decision."
I've been filled with nervous energy since. If she took me out of school, I didn't know what I would do! I cwouldn't imagine being without Kira. Ever since I met her , I had just been happier. The door creaked open behind me, making me jump in my seat. The room was filled with voices as everyone found a seat. The meeting was going to start. I had been a ticking time bomb this whole time and at that moment I felt like I might explode. I started breathing heavier but then a smooth hand was on top of mine.
"Hey, Milo," Kira whispered, her chair squeaking as she pulled it next to mine, "You okay?"
I nodded, happy to have her there. The ticking time bomb was now replaced with butterflies.
"Thanks for coming, everyone. Let's get down to business. I received a call from Mrs. Trowe last night about what happened yesterday. I was shocked by what I heard. I haven't heard of a case of bullying this bad in a while. I don't know what to say. I would like to hear both sides of the story so, Riley, please explain yourself," Mrs. Woods said.
