(Hey everyone, thanks for supporting this book, you're finally about to learn Ellie's backstory, so please enjoy!!)
It all began to come back to her in flashes, the things she had tried to forget. Her mom. Her dad. Before all of it got taken from her. She remembered that day. When her normal life ended.
"Ellie, honey! Hospital. Now!" Ellie's mother called from the living room.
It was the middle of the afternoon, and Ellie had been studying for her graduate school exams. She had returned to her childhood home to help her mom with the last final days of pregnancy.
Ellie threw her books down on the bed and went into the living room to see her mom, struggling to get up from the couch to go get their designated 'go-bag.' Ellie helped her up before turning and grabbing the keys on the counter and her cellphone. She spotted Charlie coming down the stairs and picked him up.
"Put me down, Ellie!" He whined, trying to kick out of her arms. "I'm not a baby!"
"Yeah, well, in a little while, you're gonna be wishing you were still the baby," Ellie said, setting him down, but dragging him out to the garage. She put on his coat and his shoes and buckled him into his car seat. Getting into the front driver's seat, she adjusted the mirror and backed out of the garage. She watched her mom lock the door to the house and waddle over to the car. She got into the seat beside her and sighed.
"This is the last time that I'm doing this. Who know you could get pregnant again at 42?" she muttered, looking over at Ellie. They drove to the hospital in silence, with Ellie's mom shifting uncomfortably every so often.
As they arrived, Ellie dropped her mom off and parked the car, before grabbing the go bag in one hand and Charlie in the other. As she locked the car, she spotted her father pulling in a few spots away. He saw her and waved.
"Ready to get another sibling? " he asked as they approached him. Charlie shook his head and pouted, causing their dad to laugh. He grabbed the go bag from Ellie and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Alright, let's go help your mom."
When they made their way into the delivery room, Ellie spotted her mom making a scene and sighed.
"No! No. I want an Epi NOW! I am not going through this 'waiting' bs. I've one this twice now, and I know the pain. I am NOT-" she broke off when she noticed that the family was behind her. "Nevermind. Can I get my room now, though?"
The poor nurse gulped and went over to the nurses' station and said something quietly.
Within moments, they were transported to their own room where Ellie sat with Charlie as their parents talked.
I should have brought my books. Ellie thought to herself. She sighed, it was too late now. She watched her father leave the room, probably heading down to the cafeteria before he was stuck up in the room during labor.
They sat and talked for a little while until her mother's contractions began to come faster, and Ellie decided to go look for her dad. She stepped out of the little room, carefully sliding the door shut behind her. She walked down the hallway, past the delivery rooms and out to the elevator. As she was about to get on, she heard muffled shouting coming from a closet just down the hall. She wandered down that way and pressed her ear up against the wooden door.
"No, Jenkins, you leave my family out of this, alright? They have nothing to do with the whole thing. Anne doesn't even know!" It was her father's voice.
Another low voice came from behind the door "Richard. The bosses don't know that. Listen. I know you're a cop. They know you're a cop. FBI? CIA? Well, no matter what, they're gonna come for you and your family. They have people up there too, you know."
