The whole rest of the van ride was silent. Ellie held tightly to Charlie and Ava, who both eventually fell asleep. She watched the miles go by and sighed. In the front seat, the American had fallen asleep also. There were two guards in the seat behind her who were still fully alert. She closed her eyes for a split second, only to be shaken awake.
"Come on. We're stopping," the American said. Ellie looked up to see a forlorn side-of-of-the-road rest stop. It was still pitch black out. The American dug through Ellie's go back and pulled out the things that Ellie would need to take care of her sister. The van door was opened and Ellie woke Charlie up and carried Ava and Charlie to the bathroom. They entered the women's side. It was completely empty. She watched as both of the male guards entered the bathroom with her.
She went into the biggest stall and locked the door shut behind her. She took care of both her siblings before relieving herself. She took a deep breath and exited the stall, coming to the sinks and helped to wash all their hands and faces.
"You didn't have to come in with us," she mumbled quietly. She felt completely violated as they watched her washing her face. They escorted her back to the car, this time putting her in the back seat with the kids. They put bars up, protecting themselves from her. She sighed. She was like some animal to them.
"Sorry for the precautions," the American said, getting back into the car. "It's more to protect you than us. We don't know if anyone will come looking for you."
Ellie nodded. As the van got started again, exhaustion swept over her like a wave. Charlie and Ava were also sleepy, so the three of them crashed together.
At some point, while they slept, a caravan of police cars with their sirens on and cars containing Steve, T'Challa the man in the cat-suit, and Steve's friend, Sam, joined up with the van transporting Ellie and the kids to Germany.
Ellie woke up to a light shining in through the tinted windows and the sight of the Berlin city around them.
"We're almost here. I will leave you in the custody of the CIA. They're going to want to bring you in for questioning," the American said. Ellie nodded.
"Bucky's innocent, I swear," she said.
"They'll be the ones to determine that," he responded.
Ellie soon found herself being unloaded from the van, with her go bag on her back, juggling Ava in one arm and Charlie's hand in hers. She looked around her. They were in a large garage, surrounded by many other vans, cars, and military officials. She was bewildered at the sight. Suddenly she saw two women who looked like social workers coming towards her. Ellie backed away.
"No. No, no, no, no," she said as they came close to her.
"Since you're going in for questioning, we're going to take care of them for a little while," one of the women said nicely. She took Ava out of Ellie's hand, and the other woman took Charlie. Ellie tried to go after them, but she felt herself being grabbed by someone.
"They'll be okay."
Ellie looked up. It was Steve, Bucky's friend.
"They can't take everything from me," she whispered. He looked down at her, taking in the sight of her.
Her cheek was completely bruised over, her clothes were still dirty from the fight. She was worn down from stress and anxiety. Suddenly Steve's eyes flickered past her. Ellie turned around to see Bucky being pushed in, contained in a small box. He was completely restrained with giant metal restraints that seemed to fizz with electricity. Steve still held on to Ellie, and he felt her stiffen up when she caught sight of Bucky.
