Autumn 2001
The air was crisp and cold, I pulled my scarf across my lips so they wouldn't chap. My warm breath heated the scarf when I exhaled, the walk into the venue felt like forever in this weather. I was walking with my friend, Lilia, to the Coldplay gig. She convinced me to come when she found me in the apartment eating ice cream and watching chick flicks. I'll spare you the sad story of my tragic break up.
"Stop dragging behind! We aren't going to get a good spot at this rate!" Lilla called from In front, we had standing tickets because she wanted to get as Close as possible to Guy Berryman. The venue was an old building on one of the main streets of Leeds, it's windows were blacked out and were covered by band and artist gig posters. The walls were worn down by the crowds that would wrap round the outside. A large man stood at the door as we entered, we were a bit late so the crowds were already let in. Handing our tickets to the man I could hear the noise booming through the walls, they weren't to start for another hour so it was either the warm up act or just music to fill time. In the venue it smelt of sweat and heat lingered on your skin as you entered, we gave our coats to the cloakroom as the heat was unbearable.
"I better catch Guy's attention" Lilla adjusted her top to allow a little cleavage.
"Trust you" I laughed
"What? I read it's the first thing lads look at!" she looked down to see if it was a little to much but went with it anyway.
The doors were manned by another pair of large men, they opened the doors and we were greeted by a sea of people that stretch to the back of the room.
"Maybe we should come earlier next time" I looked out across the vast space, we really need to plan our time better...
"This heat has made my throat dry, come get a drink with me?" Lilla looked over to the bar, it was against the back wall opposite the stage. We pushed through the crowds, they were hot and it made me very uncomfortable. A young lad at the bar took notice as we sat on the bar stools.
"What can i get you girls?" He flashed a cheeky smile and rested his hands on the counter.
"Just a coke please, Mill?" Lilla called me Mill as my nickname was Millie, and ever since she's called me Amelia or Mill.
"Just an ice water please" i smiled and pulled money out my pocket, i took the time to check my phone. 8:15, only 45 minuets .
We grabbed our drinks and headed for the crowd, how were we going to get any where near the stage? I'm quite small so it was quite hard to see over all the tall people.
"What are we going to do?" Lilla huffed.
"Have fun taking them in there" a voice joked form beside me, i turned to see a young lad who was taller than me stood smiling at us.
"They will fly right out ya hand" he pointed at our drinks and chuckled.
"I was thinking that" i replied as i stood looking out over the crowd.
"Sorry i must look like a right weirdo, I'm Charles, but people call me Ricky" he put his hand out which we shook in turn.
"I'm Lilla and this is Amelia" Lilla flashed a smile at him, she was never good at flirting.
"Its lovely to meet you two, you got seats or standing?" He asked his eyes were a light blue and stood out in the dark, they were beautiful..
"Standing, you here with anyone else or?" I asked him. The room got hotter and hotter by the second.
"Yeah i'm here with some mates they're down front, want to squeeze in?" I didn't even have time to think before Lilla responded for me.
"Yeah why not?" She pulled my arm as we followed him, pushing through the crowds. I dont think i've said sorry and excuse me so much in life. We reached a spot a couple people back from the stage, we were really close and i was shocked that he would take us this close only knowing us for less than 10 minuets.
"These are my mates" he smiled at the three lads stood talking, they all turned their attention to us and broke away from their convocation.
"This Andrew, Simon and Nick" he pointed at each of them when he said their name. They all seemed like a lovely bunch of lads and right laugh too.
"This is what i call lucky" Lilla grabbed my arm and squeezed it, a smile spread across her face.
The gig was amazing, Coldplay are amazing when they are live, i can't wait to able to see them in a large venue so j have more chance at seeing something thought.
After, Lilla and I grabbed our coats and walked back into the cold night, we saw Ricky and the other lads stood outside. Ricky smiled when we saw us and walked over.
" If was great to meet you two tonight and i just wanted to ask if you would like to come to see our band next week at this place?" He awkwardly pointed to the building behind us.
"You have a band?" I asked, lads in bands were always trouble.
"Yeah we arent big yet, but one day you never know" he smiled and looked at his shoes. "We're called Parva if you're interested and want to come down" he gave us a little card each, like a business card. With that him and his friends walked off down the road.
I never saw Ricky again, i moved out of Leeds only three years later to do a course in Film and media, it was the best thing i'd ever done.
Lilla stayed in Leeds and became the editor for the areas local magazine and papers. She was really high up and was close to getting a job with a higher media company for the whole area.
I never heard of their group either, Parva never played much, but when i did i must have not heard it.
I'd forgotten all about it until now...
-Hope you enjoyed that chapter, my first chapters are never good so i apologize.
