America sat in the chair beside the hospital bed that a good friend of his was laying in. Well America wasn't so sure about the 'good friend' part. Sure they had some good times together and Alfred for once in his life felt like he found a forever friend because of many reasons. One Maxwell knew about the nations existing as personifications so Alfred didn't have to hide that from him (that doesn't include Tyler because he was planning on telling her soon), two he actually listened to what the American had to say and three the human made him feel like he belonged for once and America will be forever grateful for that.

Sad thing was it all came crashing down when Maxwell confessed his love for Alfred and stated that he wouldn't give up on having him as his own. Alfred had only been in love once and to this day he still loved Amelia with all his heart, but he couldn't bring himself to lead Maxwell in like that. It was against his morals and character. So when Maxwell told him that he loved Alfred had to let him down easy.

He figured it would be easy as that and they could go back to being friends like before. Oh boy was he wrong. Maxwell had proved time and time again through out the entire day that they could never be friends. As much as America wanted to deny the fact that this guy had literally stalked him and harassed him, he knew he couldn't do that. He knew what he had do and what type of reaction it would get but it had to be done for both their sakes.

America snapped out of his thoughts when he heard a groan. Maxwell's eyes slowly opened revealing a pair of peaceful grey orbs. Maxwell blinked a couple times to adjust his vision and looked at his surroundings in confusion as white walls and ceiling came into his view. He could hear the faint beeping of machines and finally registered the immense pain he was in. A groan fell from his lips as he felt the ache spread through out his body and felt that his throat was also pretty dry.

Bandages were wrapped around almost every part of his body including his head which probably meant he had a concussion or something along those lines. Maxwell looked to his side and noticed someone sitting in the chair beside the bed and looked only mildly surprised when he saw Alfred sitting in the chair.

"Hello Alfred, how've you been?" Maxwell asked and watched as the American personification's face shifted from troubled to worried in a matter of seconds. "I should be asking you that. How do you feel, Max?" America smiled sadly at the human as a hoarse chuckle escaped the human man's throat. "Like shit, Your brother really packs a good punch. I guess the hockey stick helped a little too." Maxwell chuckled which became a cough that had America up from his seat and getting the glass of water from one of the tables before he was back at Maxwell's side and tipping his head up so he could drink the water (though he was careful with the bandages).

"Thank you Alfred. Sometimes I just can't help but fall in love with you over and over again." Alfred looked uncomfortable and awkward at the comment and set the glass on the table before turning back towards Maxwell with a completely serious expression that had Maxwell very nervous. "Listen Maxwell we need to talk. It's about our friendship..." America trailed off as he sat down and looked down at his feet not making eye contact with the political adviser.

Maxwell knew this was coming. He just wished he could have prolonged the time until it actually happened. "Look Alfred I know--" Maxwell was cut off by America who shushed him and sighed as he fixed his posture. "No, no. Maxwell it's my turn to speak and you need to listen very very carefully. Got it?" Alfred commanded folding his hands in his lap before he made eye contact with Max who nodded at the American's request.

"We've been good friends for almost a year, correct?" A nod was his response. "And I know you devolved feelings for me somewhere along the ride, right?" Another nod. "Maxwell I'm sorry to say this but I don't love you and I think we should stopped being friends." America said as Maxwell felt his heart shatter into a million pieces when he heard what America had said and felt tears form in the corners of his eyes.

"Why?" Was the only thing Maxwell could say as he felt the tears now flow freely down his face and land on the sheets and his hospital gown. America tried to suppress the urge to cry as well because he was about to cut off the only good friendship he probably ever had. "This clearly isn't in your best interest to keep being friends with me. I mean look at you! Your sitting in a hospital bed with a concussion, a broken nose, a broken arm and probably more injuries that the doctor didn't tell me about. And it's all my fault if I'd just stayed with you then Mattie wouldn't have---" America now sobbed openly as tears streamed down face and past his glasses.

"Alfred non of this is your fault!" Maxwell suddenly shouted causing America to look up in shock (when had he looked down?). "It's all my fault because I didn't take the hint that you weren't interested in me and I regret that immensely, but just know no matter what...." Maxwell looked into Alfred's beautiful sky blue one last time and smiled sadly before continuing, "I will never and I mean NEVER stop loving you, okay?" Alfred looked at him in shock before he sobbed a little more and stood up from the chair and slowly walked towards the door.

"I'm sorry Maxy.." America opened the door and stepped out, closing the door behind him. Once he left the room Maxwell started sobbing loudly and his heart monitor started spiking as his emotions went all over the place. Though he couldn't see it, he knew Alfred was crying on the other side door just as heartbroken as he was.
