"Ender, It's time to go!" My father calls.
My name, Ender, means extremely rare. I am extremely rare. Actually, I'm impossible. My world, has no color. Just black and grey. There is an exception. Me. I am the only color. I have bright blue eyes. Many people fear me for it. Why don't they admire me for it? It's a silly thought to think but an effective one.
I hurry down the stairs. Each step brings a creek. I swerve around the corner almost knocking things off the counter top. I grab the door knob and twist it revealing the outside.
"Bye!" I shout as I sprint out the door.
"Bye! Good luck!" He yells back.
Good luck for what?
I run past people and houses. Each one has grey bricks lined up at random. It makes it look out of place. I like it.
I am going where all the people learn. The Center Of Knowledge. Soon, the bells will chime signaling that I'm late. The center is very serious about being late. I'm very rarely on time.
I find the entrance to the Center. I swing open the door with speed.
I expect to see the hallways empty and everyone in class. Instead, I see lots of people that look my age crowding around someone. Not just someone, but two people. One a lady, her hair short with a professional dress. The other ones a strong man. He doesn't look professional. Piercings dazzle his ears and nose, his hair sticks out at odd angles. Spikes stick around his bracelet. The thing that pointed out the most was his snake tattoos slithering up and around his arms. It looks almost real like they are strangling all the air out of him.
The lady clears her throat.
"Today is an important day. Today determines your future." She pauses, clearing her throat once more.
"Today determines your spouses futures."
No pressure there.
Is today the test?
The test, a way for the society to see if your important or if they need you. If they think they could use you, you leave your family and start a new life working for the government. If they decide you are a waste of time, then you just stay here. It must be a very important opportunity because my mother left us for it. She got a second test when she was older for some reason. I guess she was just special.
"One by one each of you will go into a separate room." The man says. "Either I or Vinnie will give you the test."
I am secretly hoping for the man. He looks like he is hiding something and I am a super curious girl. Maybe he has a deep dark secret. It's weird, but I can tell when people are hiding something. I can see it in their eyes.
They both start to make their way to the rooms where we will get tested. Vinnie walks with long strides making taping noises every time her heels hit the floor. The man walks steady and silently.
I look around at the peoples faces. Some have fear on their face and some have determination. I smile. I'm always up for a challenge.
