Max looked at the limp Shawn's body in his arms. His face was wet from tears, as he saw the life leaving his beloved's body. Shawn was still alive, but barely. There was one thing left for Max to do.
Witchcraft was based on equal trade. When performing spells, you had to trade something of equal worth. This trade explained the logic behind healing potions; you were trading the living plant's life force.
But Shawn was dying. Without his tools and potions to enhance his magic, Max could trade only one thing - His own life force.
"I'm sorry" whispered Max, as his lips found Shawn's.
He felt energy seeping from him. He didn't feel scared or afraid, he knew what he was doing.
Max saw the wounds on Shawn's body begin to close, his cheeks regaining normal colour. Seeing the life come back to Shawn, Max felt relieved and happy. He didn't care what would happen to him.
"I'm sorry" whispered Max. "I love you...". With those final words, his eyes closed and he slipped into the darkness.
When had Luke arrived it was already too late.
Shawn was sitting on the ground and holding Max's body. He was trying to wake him up but to no avail.
Luke immediately checked Max's pulse, sighing with relief.
"Idiot, what have you done this time..." Luke whispered, softly caressing Max's hair.
The Alpha of the pack carried Max into the pack's hospital, as Doctors immediately rushed over. Shawn growled, as one of them tried to take Max out of his hands, but Luke's disapproving look made him release his grasp. Doctors requested they leave the ward, as they really didn't need an enraged wolf, trying to rip all medical personnel into shreds, for touching his mate.
Shawn and Luke waited outside for more than an hour. Luke sat on a couch in the waiting room, as Shawn paced back and forth. Luke had briefly explained to Shawn what had happened, and Shawn was really upset. But he knew, if the roles would have been reversed, he would give his life for Max's any time.
After another torturous half an hour finally, a doctor showed up out of Max's ward.
"You can come in..."
He didn't need to repeat that to Shawn twice. In an instant, he was in Max's ward, next to his bed.
Shawn was heartbroken. Max's small body, with all kind of tubes and cords, was lying on a bed pale and lifeless. He looked even smaller. You could see black circles under his eyes. The heart monitor was beeping next to the bed, giving more dread to an already depressing atmosphere.
Shawn kneeled next to the bed and took Max's cold hand in his.
"Max, can you hear me? Baby, please, wake up, please, I beg you."
Without realizing, tears were already streaming down his cheeks. He was devastated.
"How long it will take for him to wake up?" Shawn asked the doctor, standing now behind him.
"We can't know for sure. I was a student when the pack still had witches. I saw something like this only one time. But sadly enough, it didn't end very well." The doctor lowered his grey head.
Shawn didn't want to listen. He didn't even want to think about the possibility of losing his mate. He was holding Max's cold hand, trying to warm it up.
Later, Max's parents arrived. Shawn didn't leave his side, not even later that night. He left only to change his clothes and wash the blood from his body. All the rest of the time he spent next to Max's bed in the recliner.
