As I made my way downstairs for what seemed like an ordinary family dinner, I nearly fell to my second death down the stairs. My parents failed to mention that we would be accompanied by guests. Over the years, my parents hosted evening get-togethers with numerous unenjoyable people: Vlad, the GIW, and even Mr. Lancer. However, this evening's guest surpassed them all on the scoreboard of unpleasantness.

It was as I neared the top of the steps. One foot moved in front of the other perfectly, until I saw the one and only Dash Baxter standing in the doorway with his parents. Only then did my footing falter; I tripped and fell down the flight of stairs, landing face-first on the toes of Dash's shoes.

"Maybe next time, try using both legs while walking, Fentrip," Dash quipped with a smirk. Suppressing the urge to retort, I shot him a glare and picked myself up.

As my dad led Dash and his parents to the dining area, my mom stayed behind to dote over my embarrassing fall. "Honey, are you okay?" She asked.

"I'm fine," I breathed out. "Why are they here?" I gestured to the three guests mingling with my dad and sister.

"Oh, Danny, you know how long your father and I have been friends with the Baxters. Doctor and Mrs. Baxter are old friends of ours from college—you and Dash used to hang out all the time," my mom reminded me, leading me to the table with a light, motherly hand on my shoulder. "We figured it was time to get together to discuss a few things."

Mentally rolling my eyes, I took a seat across from Dash, the only spot left unclaimed. A playful leer toyed on his lips as he eyed me menacingly. This is my home—my safe haven, I thought to myself, yet here I am sitting across from the school's resident bully.

"So, Shannon." My dad's loud voice interrupted my thoughts. "Did you get work off for the trip?"

"Absolutely Jack—I wouldn't miss this thing for the world!" Dash's mom said with a beaming smile. What trip? I furrowed my brows as I tried to remember if they had mentioned any trip.

"If you strain any harder, you might pop an artery," Dash mumbled under his breath loud enough for only me to hear. Rolling my eyes, I forced myself to ignore the stupid face eying me.

"Wait, what trip?" Jazz asked, echoing my earlier thoughts.

"Your father and I received the opportunity to attend this huge engineering conference down in California," gesturing with her fork, my mom explained. "We've always wanted to be accepted into one of these things, and the moment the letter was received we contacted Shannon and Lillian to see if they would join us—"

"Which was something we couldn't pass up either," Lillian, Dash's other mom, finished.

"When is this conference?" Jazz pressed further. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see her absentmindedly chewing on her bottom lip in anticipation.

"It's in a few weeks, dear," my mom reassured. Then, her tone grew serious. "I'm entrusting you, Jasmine, to be the adult around here."

"Mom, you already know I'm more responsible than Dad."

Ignoring the offended "hey" my dad made, my mom wore a playful smile. "I know, which means the Baxters, your father, and I have nothing to worry about. You, Danny, and Dash will have a great time together!"
