How to Knit a Hat
In this project you will be needing a ball of yarn, scissors, a crochet hook, a
needle with a large eye and a round hat loom that is your size. A kit with a needle and
a crochet hook and all sizes of hat looms can easily be found in any craft store.
To set up your hat first you will need to find the end to your yarn ball. Tie the yarn
end in a knot around the one peg that is sticking out of the side. This is your starting
point. Go straight above the peg and to the peg that is on the right. Starting on the
inside wrap the yarn around the top of the peg once. Then go to the peg on the right
and do the same thing. Continue to keep wrapping peg by peg until you reach the peg
that you started at. Do not wrap around that same peg.
Now that you have wrapped your yarn around each peg once. You will now push
all of the loops down to the bottom of the pegs keep wrapping around. After that you
will now have room to make another row at the top of all of the pegs until you get back
where you started. Push that row of loops down to the middle of the peg. Make one
more row of loops at the top of the peg. This row will stay at the top of the peg for what
you will be doing next. From here you will wrap your yarn around the one peg that is
sticking out of the side to secure it so that it will not unravel all of your work so far.
Now it is time to get your metal hook out. Then start with the first peg that you
wrapped around and hook the two bottom loops over and off of the peg. Then take the
loops off of the hook.Repeat this until you have done so with all four pegs. Keep
repeating all of these steps until you have done it five times. Then stop where you
started your hat.
Next take the end of the yarn that is tied around the peg that is sticking out of the
side of your loom. Make sure that it can not unravel your hat so far. Do so by
attaching something big enough, like a pom-pom, so it will not unravel.
After that, keep working on your hat. You can measure it to see if it is big
enough at any time. Keep the side with the pegs up and slide the bottom of the hat on.
Adjust the hat to your head to tell if it is long enough. Keep in mind that when you finish
your hat, you will be pulling the top tight so that it gets smaller at the top. When your
hat is large enough the final step is to take it off of the loom.
Take your yarn and leave one foot before cutting an end to it. Thread your needle
with the end that is attached to your loom. One by one, take the last loops off of their
pegs. This is done by threading your needle through each loop and pulling tight. Once
you are done doing this, you will pull it to a tight pointed top. Next, pull the yarn to the
inside of the hat. tie a knot so that the hat will not unravel. You can also stick a pom-
pom, tie a bow or leave the top undecorated. You are now ready to enjoy a warm hat
on a cold winter day!
