When I park in the parking garage that was connected to Julian's office building, I take a deep breath to just calm myself down before getting out of my car. Whenever I'm here, people are constantly staring at me because they all know me as the boss's fiance so they were either scared of me or really wanted to talk to me. I've been stopped multiple times by the people that work for Home Our Community here and I would be perfectly fine if they talked about the non-profit, but they don't. They just talk about Julian or my personal life and that's not something I'm up for talking about with a stranger.
I make sure I look presentable before going up the elevator and into the lobby where there were people waiting. Julian was constantly hiring people along with Andrea, who still had her offices settled here. I feel like every time I come here there are about 20 people here that were waiting to be interviewed by Human Resources. Not that I minded because if it made Julian's businesses run smoother, then I was totally up for it.
I walk up to the receptionist desk where there was a man sitting there that I hadn't met before. He looked pretty confident where he is while he talked on the phone to someone. But as soon as he saw me walking up to his desk, that confidence vanished. He stuttered to whoever he was talking to about how he'll need to put them on hold before he sets the phone down to look at me. His face falters when he sees my bruised nose, but he immediately covers up his expression with a smile. "Hi, Mr. Brigg, how may I help you?"
I hold back my chuckle at the fact that everyone already knew my name here. "You can just call me Miles."
The man immediately nods his head. "Of course, Miles."
"Do you know if Julian is in his office? You don't need to tell him I'm here, I just need to know where he is," I ask him and he immediately gets to work to type away on his computer. I look around while he searches for where my fiance is. I notice that a group of people is pointing to me while talking in a circle, but as soon as I make eye contact with one of the women, she quickly says something to her coworkers and they all look away.
"Julian should be in his office. You don't want me to tell him that you're here?" He asks, looking a bit skeptical, so I give him a warm smile.
"Don't worry about it. I'll just go up to see him," I tell the receptionist before giving him a small wave and making my way to the escalator. Once I get to the top of the moving steps, I take my time to get into the elevator. When I step in, I immediately feel the stares of the other people as I make sure to not meet anyone's eyes as I lean against the wall, pulling out my phone to busy myself. With all the people that work here, it's almost impossible to get anywhere quickly. Every few floors, the elevator is stopped for people to either get on and get off. Luckily, I wasn't impatient at the moment since I was just trying to think of what to say when I saw Julian.
When I'm a few floors from the one I'm looking for, I pull out my key card to swipe it. Since I come here every now and then, Julian gave me a card that would make it so I could get up to the floor he's on without having to be escorted. I felt the stares get heavier as the buttons in the elevator go white since my card takes priority against the rest of them. Perks of being engaged to the man that owns the building.
When the elevator doors open on my floor, I step out without looking back at anyone. People continue to stare at me as I make my way through the hallways and cubicles where people were sitting and working. I know I stick out like a sore thumb in my light blue jeans along with my orange Adidas hoodie, but I didn't care at that moment. I make my way to Julian's office before knocking on the wooden door. I expect to hear him immediately tell me to come in, but when that doesn't happen, I knock again. When there still isn't a response, I creak the door open to see an empty desk, which makes me let out a groan.
