Its the year 2025, gaming has been dominated by both genders now. All people talk about are the games they play. I am the only one who catches bugs at the park, walks down the street for fun, or even cares about local news anymore. Even Tomiko found her game.
My parents constantly encouraged me to get a Nerve Gear to play with the other kids but I always refused, contempt with my iPod 8.
But that all changed one day when Tomiko met me at Okinawa's World War II museum. She saw me examining the weapons in the glass case and rushed up to me with overwhelming joy.
"Takara," she panted. "You know how you like Ultraman?"
"Yeah," I replied. "Why?"
"Get a Nerve Gear system and come over to my house."
I felt my cheeks burn. "Y-your house!?"
"Yeah! Is something wrong?"
I felt my heart race. "Well... I-I just... I've never been invited to a... girl's house before."
"Get over it! Tell your parents about the Nerve Gear and I'll surprise you."
"What is it?"
She grinned devilishly. "I'm going to make your dreams come true."
With that comment, she ran off, leaving me to try to mold what she has painted for me.

"Okasan, Otosan. I have made a decision," I announced at the dinner table. "I'll try the Nerve Gear system."
My mom smiled. "Good for you, honey. I'm so glad you decided to try out the new technology."
"Technology is made for you youngsters to test and improve," my dad said as he slurped up some ramen. "You need to keep up in order to understand!"
"Y-yes sir," I replied. "How much is it?"
My parents grinned. "We already bought you one last week."
My heart stopped. "What?"
"We told Tomiko to search for a game you might like so that you would join the gaming community last week. She agreed and promised results in a week. She worked so hard."
I stared down at my meal as my stomach dropped. What have I stepped into?

I laid down on the bamboo floor of Tomiko's bedroom with the Nerve Gear helmet on my head. Tomiko was creating an account for me on the system.
"Are you ready?" she asked as she put on her Nerve Gear.
"I guess so," I replied.
She tapped a key on her laptop and jumped onto her bed. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
"Link Start!"
