Chapter One

Shawn Mendes. You might know him now as a big star singer, heart throb, hell, maybe even a sex king. But I know him as my goofy friend that was a my fake boyfriend so I can get out of my abusive relationship. I was the inspiration of his song Treat You Better. Of course, he wrote that song when we were still in high school together.

Aiden was my ex boyfriend, boyfriend at the time. Shawn and I lived across the street from each other. When I moved in, I was the most quiet kid on the block. I had no siblings and Shawn's parents offered to watch me while my parents went off to their work. Shawn was a single child back then. He shared everything with me, not that I took anything from him until it was an orange crème yogurt. That was when we really started to be friends. He helped me start speaking because no one had got me to speak a word. Of course, my parents were too caught up in their lives to realize that I was at least saying anything. Soon, Shawn's family began to be my family.

When I met Aiden, I fell in love with him. Now see, that's the problem. You shouldn't fall in love, it get's you hurt. No, you slowly love someone. Take small steps into loving someone. For a long time, I thought that he was the sweetest guy in the whole planet. He asked me out and we went on a couple of dates. But when we had our first kiss, that was when it all went downhill. He started sticking his tongue down my throat and beating me. And that's where my story begins. At Valley Farm Public School.

7:05 am

BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP

I slammed my hand down on my alarm, shutting it up. I groaned as I got up and went to my closet, looking through it for a solid five minutes before choosing a white tank top, denim jeans, a grey sweater and my black and white converse. I grabbed my bag, which held all my school stuff, then I grabbed my phone and stuffed it in my pocket. I went to the bathroom and did my morning routine, then I put on mascara and a light layer of eyeshadow and a bit of blush to make it so I don't look so pale. I went downstairs to see that my parents already left, so I went to Shawn's house.

Since we've been neighbors for so long, we knock as we let ourselves in. Shawn was sitting at the counter with his mom and younger sister. His dad was most likely at work or sleeping in.

"Heya Katy. How'd you sleep sweetheart?" Shawn's mom asked me.

"I slept alright. How about you."

"Not too bad myself. Did you eat at your house?"

"Yeah." I lied like I did every morning. I'm not depressed or anything, I just don't like breakfast foods.

"Okay, well you two should leave or else you'll be late."

"Okay, bye mom." Shawn said, standing up and grabbing his bag and we left.

As we were walking down the road to school, my phone rang. It was Aiden. I sighed.

"Is it Aiden?" He asked.

"Yeah."

"What does it say?"

"He has a surprise for me." I said grimly.

"I wish you weren't with him. He treats you so bad."

"I know. But I don't have a way to leave."

"You can come up with something. You're the talented writer here."

"Yeah, but I just don't want anything to happen to me after I break up with him. I'm just scared about what'll happen."

"I'll help you plan something after school today."

"Really?" I asked, looking up at him hopeful.

"Of course." He said, wrapping his arm around my shoulders, pulling me closer to him. "That's what friends do."

I smiled to myself. Shawn was the greatest guy in the world. I could never ask for anything more from him. Nothing ever. He was just the greatest.

7:38 am

We finally get to school and the bell was about to ring and Aiden would be pissed if I didn't meet up with him, so Shawn and I said our goodbyes and went our different ways. I went to the front of the school where he always is. His group of friends were smoking something.

'Oh, great. This was going to be the best.' I said in my mind. The worst times with him was when he was high or drunk. I was about to turn and leave when he called out to me.

"Hey, bitch, you leaving without saying hi to me?"

I bit my lip holding back anything that was threatening to come out and I walked over to him.

"Hi, Aiden." I said giving him a peck on the lips. When I pulled away, he grabbed the back of my neck and pulled me in, sticking his tongue down my throat. After a minute, he pulled away.

"Want some babe?" He asked, offering me a joint.

"No thanks. I'm good."

"Suit yourself."

When the bell rang, signaling for school to start, I ran to my first class where Shawn would be. He was waiting outside for me. I gave him a fake smile as he held the door opened for me. it was only 7:45 am and the day was already going down in the shithole it usually went down whenever Aiden was high.

Our first class was ballroom and we were all assigned to one partner the whole time. Luckily, Shawn and I were placed together. But for five minutes of class, we just usually talked about random things.

"Muffin, what's wrong?" He asked me, using his cute nickname he has for me that he only uses. "You look like you're about to cry and I've never seen you cry."

It was true. I never usually cry. But the way Aiden was, knowing I don't like being around him when he's doing shit like that; knowing that I hate kissing him when he has that stench in his mouth, all of it was just over the line.

"It's nothing." I lied, biting my cheek to hold back the tears.

"It's Aiden, isn't it?"

I shook my head, but he came over to me and held me as I blinked several times to keep the tears at bay, but a few of them spilled down my cheeks. The last time I cried was years and years ago when I was a baby. I don't really cry and everyone knows. But as some of them fell, more and more fell. Soon, it was uncontrollable. I couldn't stop crying for the hell of it.
