"Dear students of rosewood," Professor Devine's booming voice hit all sides of the Rosewood hall theatre, "We will be holding a masquerade ball for the year 13 students who are leaving us this year," her eyes drifted to Lottie and Ellie, and then Jamie, who was sat with Raphael and Percy, furiously avoiding eye contact with Lottie. "And may I also say, We are delighted to have Miss. Pumpkin and Mr. Volk with us again.

"Yes," Headmaster Croak said, "you will all have to wear masks and hide your identity, for that is very much the point of a masquerade ball."

"It is in four days, plenty of time." Dame Bolter said.

"You may leave now."

All of the year 13 students flooded out of the theatre.

"Another ball," Ellie grinned, "what's going to go wrong this time?"

Lottie gave her a half-hearted smile and they carried on walking. Suddenly, Jamie appeared before them, so fast it was as though he teleported.

"What do you want?" Ellie asked furiously, taking Lottie's hand.

"I am still your Partizan, Ellie," he sighed.

"I don't care," Ellie gave him a threatening glare, "you just left Lottie there."

He stormed away, giving Lottie a slightly pleading look before he went, although Ellie didn't notice.

"Ellie it's not that bad." Lottie said, smiling at her.

"IT IS THOUGH!" Ellie fumed, "How could he just leave you there with... Them?"

"To protect you, he is your Partizan."

"I don't care, he betrayed you."

"Ellie, that's going to far." Lottie walked away.

Ellie sighed, twiddling her thumbs and staring at the ground. Why couldn't she think before she spoke?
