The clock ticked by. A very neutral silence hung in the atmosphere. Zack turned in his chair to observe his ‘little brother’ lounging around on his bed, reading a horror manga with a nonchalant look on his face while Zack was feeling a bit restless.
Deciding to tackle the subject anyway, Zack cleared his throat.
Ryder didn’t respond to show he acknowledged Zack but Zack knew he was listening anyway.
“Ry, we’re still not done on yesterday’s topic.”
Ryder hummed indifferently.
“What happened between you and Tally?”
Turning another page, Ryder shrugged. “You know what happened between us. That nosy woman and all.”
Zack let out an exasperated sigh, not even bothering to hide his annoyance for the indirect answer.
“You know what I mean. Don’t be such a child.”
Ryder frowned and put down the book by his side, giving Zack an annoyed sideway glance. “I’m not.”
The older man raised a smug brow at the subtle childish manner.
Ryder had contemplated to ignore Zack and read the manga again but the unnatural heavy silence weighed his resolve down and he grumbled. Zack’s blank but effective stare didn’t help matters other than burning holes into his skull anyway.
“It is just as how you have assumed it,” he answered briefly, opening the book again and read but apparently the short answer didn’t satisfy Zack.
“You forced him?”
The memory of the first night they were together flashed into Ryder’s mind and he smiled pleasantly but to Zack, it was cunning.
“Forced him to what? Nothing bad happened. We just reconciled, that’s all.”
Zack snorted. “Reconciled? Doesn’t seem like that to me last night. It was obvious you did something, Ryder.”
“If you know, then there’s no point in asking,” Ryder said in exasperation, trying to concentrate on the manga.
“You had sex with him, didn’t you?” Zack finally said in brutal honesty, tired of beating around the bush. The particular honesty had Ryder grinning in amusement.
“So what? It wasn’t unpleasant anyway so it didn’t matter. Besides, we exchanged phone numbers too.”
Zack’s eyes narrowed, displeased by the obvious act of arrogance. It wasn’t like Ryder’s business is any of his concern – he could go around being promiscuous for all he cared – but Ryder was messing with Jake by messing with his son and everyone knows Jake is protective of his son and would gladly kill Ryder if he as much posed a threat to Tally (he sort of did already anyway). The past few years must have been a blessing for Jake when they had broken their friendship (Jake and Acacia are one of a kind, to put simply) and to know his son had been taken forcefully by the very man he despised may cause an unwanted dispute within the pack. And Zack hates drama.
“Ryder, stop whatever you’re planning to do to him.”
Ryder shrugged. “I’m not planning anything. In the first place, why are you reprimanding me about this? You’re not a saint yourself.”
