"...Wake up, Daddy."
Once upon an orbit of Planet Fait around its weird sun, about midway down the blue, in fulsome white fluff, a tired hero slumbered, alone upon a throne made of cloud.
A long white beard adorned Redemptor's face, flowing down over his chest from under his blue helmet. Dreaming, troubled, he mumbled to himself. "The judge... watch out, Ria... The judge he's..."
Meanwhile, at Redemptor's foot slept curled Shadowslider in a neat pile, its black feathers fluttering with each dreamy exhale. Of what do magic capes dream, you might wonder, but this not even the sylvas know.
The hero felt a gentle breeze. Opening his eyes, Rene saw Nariah smiling, blowing the white cloud from his face.
"Daddy, it's like you have a beard like an old man," Nariah giggled, her large brown eyes sparkling.
Rene stood, smiled back. She gave one last big puff and the last wisps of white blew away from her father's chin and lips.
"You keep me young, Ria, thank you. Strangest thing, I was dreaming I was in a big red place. Very cold. Very dark. Something about..."
Shadowslider whirled awake and flew to Nariah, enthusiastically licking its black feathers at her face. Nariah laughed, hugging the black cape, "Shadowslider, good boy, that's a good boy, good morning, good boy!"
As Shadowslider swooped away and back to drape itself across the back of Rene's cloud-throne, fluttering happily in the breeze, Nariah noticed something curious in the distance.
"Ooh, pretty," Nariah said, pointing to the colored clouds that had appeared on the horizon. "What beautiful sylva clouds. That's the sylvas waking up, right, Daddy? Like you told me in the story of the Giant Who Is the Sky."
"Precisely right," Rene smiled. He realized she was holding his hand, and pressing her cheek to the back of his gloved hand. He looked down at the top of her head, her long brown hair. He gently worked out a tangle with his fingertips. She swatted his hand away, "Daddy, stop."
He said, "I love you, daughter."
At the colored clouds Nariah gazed, deep in thought. Then, she said, "What is love, Daddy?"
Rene's eyes went wide. He held her close, gently squeezed her hand.
"That's a beautiful question. The most beautiful question, and people can spend their whole lives, um..."
"Are the clouds getting closer?" Nariah interrupted. "Those are good clouds, right, Daddy?"
