Bill, kid, come on. Let's go sit outside."
"Okay."
William followed his sister's boyfriend out to the bench by the hospital playground. There was no one else at the playground. The swings were empty, hanging and swinging softly in the autumn wind.
Marcus, William's sister's boyfriend, had come to visit Paige in the hospital. William was sitting by her bed, watching the machines beep and keep her alive. Marcus had knocked on the door, saying hi, and came and kissed Paige on the forehead.
"How's she doing?"
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
"She's okay."
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
"I really hope Paige'll be okay, eh, Bill?" Marcus asked, pulling William out of his reverie.
"Yeah." William said, hiding his annoyance. He hated when people called him Bill.
The doctors had told William and his father that Paige was sick a year ago. It was the smell of vaccinations, and it was hard candies that receptions gave kids to make them feel better. She a had a disease that Willaim had purposely forgot, something with a lot of letters, some type of cancer.
"Have a Dorito." Marcus said to break the silence. He thrust a bag of chips at William. Willam reached into the bag gingerly and picked out a chip the size of a guitar pick. He wasn't hungry. He never seemed to be hungry anymore, when Paige stopped cooking because she was so tired.
"Hey, Will!" A voice called from the other side of the field. William looked up from his fingertips that he constantly picked at.
"I'm going to go play over there, Marcus." William pointed to where the other boy was standing.
"Okay, kid. Remember to go back to your house by 1:00pm. Do you have a watch?"
William nodded, and ran to the other boy.
"Hey, Jack. Marcus treats me like a baby. I can't stand it." Said William.
"Hey Will. Bro, we're fucking seven." Said Jack, laughing nervously at the bad word that he had said even though adults said he shouldn't.
William gasped. "You said the f-word!"
They laughed and talked while walking back to Williams house.
