Time skip to last day of school, beginning of winter break
The screaming of the school bell rang in William's ears.
"See you in the new year, kids!" Shouted Ms Liamson over all the chatter. William rushed to the hooks on the wall outside his classroom. He hurriedly pulled on his jacket and grabbed his green Twenty One Pilots backpack. He was putting on his worn, blue boots when he was suddenly grabbed from behind.
"Hey, retard!" Someone said in William's ear. The boy holding him was Aiden Jeon, a football player and the biggest bully on the playground. Aiden was twisting William's arm behind his back, the most common form of injury used in grade three.
"Guys," Aiden laughed, "Let's give him a swirly!" He motioned for his acquaintances to pull William back into the bathroom.
Just then, like a hero in a cliche superhero movie, a boy's voice yelled "Let him go!" It was Jack. Jack punched one of the boys as hard as he could, remembering to twist his stomach like he learned while watching tv at William's house.
"And why should we?" Aiden sneered. "Your boyfriend is too gay to protect himself?" William tried to twist himself around to loosen the grip on his arms help in place by Aiden's two followers.
"First of all, that's not how being gay works." Jack stated with a matter-of-fact tone. "Second, my boyfriend would highly appreciate it if you let go of his arm." He flexed his fingers, which had turned red from the punch he had thrown.
One of the boys behind William, Reid Gaivinsky, released the hood of William's jacket. The other, Nico Solace, had his hands clasped to his violently bleeding nose. Reid walked forward and tapped Aiden on the shoulder.
Aiden spun around. "Why did you let him go?"
"Nico's nose is bleeding." Reid said in a squeaky voice which seemed fit for a young girl.
"That's gross! Go help him." Aiden ordered. While Aiden was looking the other way, Jack grabbed William's hand and pulled him off the floor. When they were hurriedly walking towards the door, with Jack's arm around William's hunched back, Aiden jumped forward and shoved Jack from behind. Jack stumbled forward and fell to the ground. Blood stained his teeth and pooled around his tongue.
"Are you okay?" William asked worriedly, pulling Jack out the door.
"Yeah— Yeah, I'm fine." Jack stuttered, blood dripping out of his mouth. "Aiden's a jerk." He started walking towards William's house, checking to make sure William was behind him.
They walked down the sidewalk, together something one would to be worried about if seen. The front of Jack's blue sweater, a mandatory part of the school uniform was stained with drops of blood. William's eyes were red, his cheeks streaked with the residue of tears.
William let out a sob. "Hey, what's wrong?" Jack asked gently, rubbing his hand in circles on William's back.
"Nothing. It's stupid." William looked up and saw Jack's face shadowed with the same worried look that used to be so often pasted on Paige's face.
"They just scared you, right?" Jack said sympathetically.
William nodded. "Yeah." He whispered. "Just if you didn't come they would've shoved my face into a toilet." William smiled slightly. "I'm so glad you came with me.
Jack put his arm around William. "I'll go with you." He said. "I'll always go with you. "
