Time skip three months, William and Jack are now in grade three. Around middle of October.

"I don't understand it. I'm probably just too stupid." William said. He was hunched over his notebook, trying to finish his homework.

"No, you're not." Jack said firmly. "You can't think like that. If you're really negative, you'll just convince yourself that you can't do anything."

William grabbed the pencil and gripped it so hard that Jack thought it would break. He gently put his hand over William's and pulled the pencil away.

"Need any help, kiddo?" William's father spoke out, startling the boys.

"No thanks, I've got this." William said, hiding his frustration. The older man sighed and took another swing of beer.

"Look," Jack explained patiently. "You've gotta take the ten from this number, then add it to this number. Then you can minus it."

William's eyes widened. "I think I get it now!" He exclaimed. "So if I have twenty minus six, I would take ten from the twenty then add it up to the zero so I have ten, then I do ten minus six, which is four, then I do one minus zero, which is one, so in the end, it's fourteen!"

William looked up. Jack was closer to his face than he thought. Jack smiled.

"Good job, William." Said Ms. Liamson. "I'm glad you finished the homework."

William grinned. "Thanks, Ms.!"
The teacher smiled at the young boy, proud of his work. William only spoke when spoken to, and sometimes not even then. It always made Ms. Liamson pleased when William showed his feelings.
