Chapter 2: Friends at the River
Jenny sat quietly by herself on a crooked tree branch above the river, its calming whispering soothing her. Suddenly, a splash came out of nowhere. Cindy's head bobbed up.
"Surprise!" She yelled, flapping her arms like a maniac.
"What the he—-" Jenny was cut off as she fell off the branch.
A huge wave came over Cindy as Jenny fell in. Just then, they heard footsteps.
"AHhhhhh!" Brandon collided into Violet, who was soaking her feet in the water.
"What the- Brandon!" Violet exclaimed.
"Brandon stood up and sprayed Violet with cold water. "It's good to see you too, Granny."
"OMG it's Viodon!" Jenny teased. "What are you you doing here? Alone?"
"No. I'm with um.."
Just as he said that, Jessie and Eric ran out from the cover of the prickly bushes.
"Ooh. Jessie and Brandon!" Jenny squealed, who got herself out of the water.
"Yes! Jessiedon!" Cindy agreed.
"You guys are so mean." Jessie pouted.
"Where's Vy?" Jessie asked.
"Exploring the forest." Jenny replied.
"Who does that alone nowadays?" Eric asked. "She's crazy."
Jenny shrugged. "Vy, I guess. Anyways, why are you worrying about Vy?"
"I'm hungry." Cindy said and pulled herself out of the water.
"Now that you mention it, I am too." Someone said.
"Who was that?" Violet asked, freaked out. Vy jumped off the tree she was hiding in. "Boo!"
Violet screamed.
"Why'd you do that?" Violet was clearly annoyed.
"Granny was scared!" Brandon laughed. "Oh. Never mind. I meant Violet."
"I brought lunch!" Vy held up the picnic basket.
"Yay! Time for lunch." Cindy cheered.
"I bet your cooking sucks." Eric said.
"But I brought sandwiches so..." Vy began passing out the peanut butter sandwiches.
"We eat this too much, Why don't we have any candy? Or do we have candy?" Cindy gave Eric her death glare, in which he immediately looked away.
"Anyways, why aren't you and Eric dating yet, Vy? It's way overdue." Cindy commented.
"What?!" They both exclaimed at the same time, making Cindy burst into giggles.
"It's cute! Vyric!" Jenny yelled.
"No, it's Cindric!" Vy protested.
"First, that ship is old and really bad, second, well, I don't know. You just suck." Cindy said, unwrapping plastic wrap from her sandwich.
"I do NOT suck, you do! You like Melanie Martini!"
"Martinez, Vy," Jenny corrected.
Just as the three friends were talking, a raccoon ran up and snatched Jenny's sandwich.
"Hey! What the heck? That's mine!" Jenny started to wave her hands at the raccoon, only making it back away.
"Don't you still have that grilled cheese sandwich?" Cindy asked while pulling out an apple. "Here, raccoon, you can have this." The raccoon took the apple, holding on stiffly to the sandwich. Cindy sighed.
"Oh well, I guess I'm gonna eat the grilled cheese sandwich." Jenny looked through her backpack.
"What the..where is it? Oh here it is!" Jenny pulled the sandwich out of her backpack.
"So what are you guys doing out here in the woods?" Vy asked Brandon.
"Camping."
"With Jessie? You and Eric are boys, but Jessie's a girl!" Jenny exclaimed. "Poor, poor Jessie."
"I know!" Jessie agreed.
"Why didn't you just refuse to go?" Jenny asked.
"My parents made me. They say it's "educational" to go camping." Jessie rolled her eyes. "I even told the Eric and Brandon were boys but still, they did not care."
"Why didn't you join us?" Vy asked.
"I didn't know! Plus, you guys left before my parents wanted me to go camping."
"Would you like to join us, Jessie? Let the boys camp together."
"No!" Brandon and Eric said in unison.
"Huh? Did I hear that right?" Vy grinned. "Brandon and Eric likes Jessie! Wait, I thought you had a girlfriend, Brandon. Kathy."
"Nooooooo." He denied.
"Yeeeeeesssss." Everyone said at the same time.
"Whatever. I don't really care. I don't even see them most of the day." She said. "They're outside the whole day, I stay in the RV. "In fact, they even sleep outside in tents."
Jenny shrugged. "Well, okay. It's up to you. If you ever change your mind, tell us."
"Okay."
