Trigger warning: Fire, Burning house, Panic...
Smoke.
Haze.
Sweat.
Burning eyes, burning throat.
Roman ran panickedly out of the house behind the other sides, chest heaving, acid tears streaming down his face. He'd woken up during the night to a peculiar smell, and then an earsplitting alarm. Flames had completely engulfed the kitchen and living room, though from where, no one was sure. Frantically he pushed the others out the door, and they immediately collapsed on the lawn once they were far enough away.
One of the neighbors had called the fire department upon smelling the house ablaze, and sirens were heard in the distance. Roman sat quickly up again, doing a head count. Everyone was out and safe, but, wait- "Virgil! Where the hell is Virgil?" He yelled, quickly growing more and more frantic. He'd been with them! Where had he gone?
Virgil had tripped and fallen down the stairs as they all rushed out the door, and there was too much smoke in the air and too much noise for him to have been noticed.
Roman shot up from the ground without hesitation, ignoring the shouts of the firemen behind him and running back into their burning home.
Virgil coughed and spluttered as smoke filled his lungs. He looked around, his eyes wide with panic. He stood, limping slightly. He didn't call out for help, knowing the others were all safe. He didn't want them to risk getting hurt to save him. Sure, he didn't want to die. Especially not like this, but he care more about the others than himself.
Roman crashed panting through the door, which promptly fell off it's hinges. "Virgil!" He yelled loudly, inhaling smoke and breaking off into a cough. "Vir- *cough*-Virgil where are you?!" Everything burned. His eyes, his throat, his skin. He knew it wasn't wise to come in here, especially with no mask or other gear, but there was no way he was leaving the other behind. "Call out to me! I'll find you!" Roman felt along the wall, crouching down a bit under the smoke.
Virgil looked up, hearing a familiar voice shout his name. It was Roman. He moved carefully forward toward him, coughing as he tried to call out. "Ro-Roman!! What are you doing here?! Get out, please! I'll be fine!"
"NO!! I'm not leaving you!!" Roman screamed through a heavy cough, heading in the direction of the voice. "Princey, I can't let you die because of me!" Virgil made his way toward Roman, or at least he hoped that's where he was going. Smoke was everywhere, fire was everywhere. The house was in ruins. Everything was gone. He sped up, finally seeing a princely outline through the smoke.
"Don't talk like that! No one is dying! We're gonna be okay!" He cried, hot tears stinging his cheeks as he tried to convince himself of that. He didn't want to die, but if he had to in order to save Virgil, then so be it. He rushed towards the figure in smoke, immediately wrapping his arms around the other's torso and scooping him up. He held the other close to his chest, partially shielding Virgil's mouth and nose from the smoke as he started to clamber through the household.
Virgil gripped onto Roman, hoping they'd make it out. Tears spilled from his eyes, his whole body shook. His head was spinning. He could barely see. Stinging tears fell down from Roman's face at an alarming rate, leaving streaks in the ash and soot that covered his skin. The doorframe was collapsing quickly, and by the time they reached it, it had almost completely caved in. It was going to trap them inside. Roman sprinted toward it, but managed to push Virgil outside onto the cool grass before it crashed down in front of him. He'd done it. Virgil was safe. And that was all that mattered.
Virgil stood almost immediately, staring at the doorframe for only half a second before charging at it, ripping the wood away piece by piece. He couldn't let Roman die. He WOULDN'T let Roman die. He screamed, finding a strength inside himself he never knew he had.
Firefighters quickly dragged the screaming Virgil away, taking him to their truck and having him sit down. Some started to spray the house with water, and two started to hack through where the door was. Several moments later, they dragged out an unconscious Roman, and set him down on the lawn to do CPR. His hair and eyebrows were singed, and fire had burned his shoulder and part of his chest through his clothes.
Virgil shoved the friefighters away without a thought, leaping from the truck. He just barely saw Roman, but he knew exactly where to go to get to him. He yelled at the people trying to help his friend. "Don't let him die! Or I swear to GOD you'll be next!" Tears streamed from his eyes, which were wide and bloodshoot.
"We're doing all we can, son." One of the firefighters replied as anoter brought an oxygen mask to roman's face. After several moments, a shuddering breath was heard, and the prince's eyes gradually opened. Virgil choked out a sob of relief and dropped to the ground beside him. "Roman, oh my god, Roman... Thank god, you're okay. I thought I lost you, i was so scared, I-"
"Virgil.." His voice was faint, and scratchy, but slowly coming back. "I'm just glad you're alive."
"Forget about me, you... you got hurt, almost killed.." Virgil's voice cracked. "I thought.."
"Everyone is safe, and that's all that matters to me." Roman coughed out, and sat up slightly. "I know I could have died back there. I knew that going in. But even knowing that, it seemed worth it."
"Roman your life matters more than mine does. You shouldn't have risked your life to save me.." Virgil paused. "... But th-thanks."
"That's bullshit, Virgil." He murmured. "Your life has just as much worth as does mine. And, well.." Roman took a deeper breath. "I love you."
Virgil's breath hitched in his throat, his cheeks red. "Roman, I.. I love you too. But you're wrong. You're a prince. What am I?" He frowned.
"Virgil, you're.." Roman slowly started to slip out of consciousness again, not from the smoke but from absolute exhaustion he felt coming down from his adrenaline rush. ".. everything." He closed his eyes again, passing out. He'd be okay, but needed to rest.
Virgil felt himself tear up, not from fear, he knew Roman was okay, but he'd never had someone say anything that nice to him before. He gently rested the prince's head in his lap. "Where are we all going to go...?"
"I dunno, kiddo." Patton's worried voice was heard behind them as he and Logan walked up and sat down. "I'm just glad we're all okay." Logan nodded. "I've called Emile. He says we can stay with him for the night." The logical side explained. Deceit slowly knelt down beside them, his scales looking odd from having been exposed to the fire, but seeming otherwise unharmed. "I.. totally was /not/ worried about you two." He mumbled. "And Roman definitely /isn't/ a hero."
Virgil smiled, laughing softly at Deceit speaking in lies. "You've got that right, De. He's my hero.." He gazed down at Roman for a moment before looking back up at the others.
Roman's breathing was a lot stronger now, and he shifted slightly in his sleep. He gripped loosely onto Virgil's jacket. Patton smiled softly. "He.. almost died, saving me." Virgil looked at Patton, his eyes slightly glossy. "I..I really don't know what else to say.."
"He truly cares about you, Virgil." Patton murmured, placing a gentle hand on Virgil's forearm "As we all do." Virgil smiled warmly. "Thanks, Dad.. Love you."
"Love you too, kiddo."
"By the way, are you doing okay?" He asked, patting the spot next to him on the grass. Patton nodded. "Yeah.. I'm still sad about the house, obviously.. all of our memories..." He sniffed, holding back tears. "But I've got you guys with me, and we're all okay, so that's what matters."
Virgil took Patton's hand and squeezed it. "It'll be okay, Dad. We'll get a new house, and we'll make even more memories!" Patton sighed softly and nodded, though a tear ran down his face.
"I guess you're right..."
