Everyone stared at me, looking tense.

How was I going to get out of this? Will I have to leave? Where will I go?

Carson and Caleb looked the most confused.

"How do you not have any burns?!" Caleb said looking exasperated and panicked .

"I don't know..." I said trying to match their levels of suprise. Carson and Caleb stared at me still stunned.

"Alright, come with us."

Hesitantly, I followed them up the ladder and we walked to where there were a few old benches and they sat down across from me. "Okay seriously how are you not burnt at all?" Carson said.

"I told you. I. Don't. Know."

Carson and Caleb rubbed their heads. "You must know!" Caleb exclaimed.

"I really don't know." I said, but even to my own ears it didn't sound convincing enough.

"You're lying." Carson said. He stood up, started pacing, and then leaned against the wall. "And it's ridiculous to think that you actually know what's going on but I can tell your lying."

"I am not lying!" I exclaimed defensively.

"Spit it out! What are you hiding?!" Carson yelled.

"I'm not hiding anything!" I yelled back.

"Yes you are!" Caleb chimed in.

I glared at them for a moment. If I were to just say: "oh yea I'm a star from outer space." they'd think I was insane, believe me, I know how people are. They fear the unknown. They hate the unknown. They'll hate me.

I honestly really don't care how they feel about me, unless it effects my chance of survival. This is kind of where I live, this strange little group gives me food and I've been told that foster care is not the best experience... That's what they say anyway.

"You guys wouldn't believe me even if I told you," I said looking at my feet.

"Come on Connie," Caleb said soothingly, using my old nick name Carson and him came up with when we met, that I made them promise to never use again. "We've known you forever. You can trust us, we'll believe you."

I looked up into their eyes. Could I trust them? No. This isn't about trust, it's about whether they're cray enough to believe me. I sighed.

"Well... How do I put this...?" I paused and took a deep breath. "I'm a star, not a celebrity of course, but a legit ament star from outer space." I stare at them waiting for their reaction.

"Yeah okay..." Carson snorts. Caleb gave me an uneasy smile that you would give to someone who was insane.

"I'm serious."

Carson just stared at me for a couple seconds.

"I can tell, but now I don't know if I should think your insane. Although the sleeping bag did burst into flames and you didn't get burned..."

"No I burned the sleeping bag."

"You can do that?!" Caleb exclaimed.

"Yep." Well at least he believes me, but that's more expected from Caleb.

"Look I get it if you don't feel comfortably with me staying here anymore, but like it or not you need me. I'm the one who gets us the most money. You'd all be dead without me."

They shared a look and then looked back at me.

"We don't want you to leave," Carson said slowly. "As crazy as this all is you're still the same Connie that we know and love-We'll keep your secret."

Love?

A feeling coursed through me. Relief maybe? I didn't know I cared to stay here, but probably because this is is how I survive.

"Well... Thank you..." I surprise myself by saying.

I sound vulnerable.

I straighten up at that at thought and stride towards the ladder.

"Wait!" Caleb says. "How does that even happen? You look like a human girl and... Do stars just look like humans or do humans look like stars or...?"

I turn my head to look at him "No. I used to be breath taking." And with that turn around and climb down the ladder.

I know they follow me down the ladder for further questioning, but I run towards the exit into the lit up streets of New York City.
