The cold bit harshly at my bare arms, and the moon light danced across my skin. I had ran out so quickly I didn't grab a coat. It was getting to personal back in there, I had to leave.
I don't think they truly believe me. I might even be able to go back and pretend it never happened. They'll think it was just a dream.
I turned into a deserted alley way. My foot found a trash can on its own accord and knocked it over. Aargh, the only thing kicking a garbage can accomplish is hurting my toe.
With a frustrated sigh I turned around and gazed up at the sky. I searched the sky for any sign of stars, but I could only see a few from this blasted city.
They shined bright and golden. How I used to be. They twinkled down on me, mocking me.
I'm in this starless city for a reason, and it's not because I want to be here. I have to live in a big city. Abnormal events including me will be drowned in other events and they will forget about me.
I want to live in a town, a town where it had few people, was quiet, and most of all I would look up at the sky at night and see the only thing I truly cared about.
Alas I cannot. One abnormal event would be recognized. I couldn't trust a town, even a small town, to keep that secret.
I'm not invincible, I could be taken and tested on by the government. I don't know what kind of tests they would perform, they could hurt me or worse kill me, they could even dissect me.
I was so caught up in my own thoughts that I bumped into someone. Looking up, I have no idea where I am. The man I bumped into seems to be maybe in his early 20's.
He stares at me in the eye for a while. Okay a bit creepy.
"Sorry." I mumble and walk past him. He grabs me by the shoulder.
"Wait, hold on."
"Why? No!" I pull away and keep walking, this time a little faster. You don't talk to creepy strangers, especially in New York. The man comes after me.
"What do you want?!" I ask walking faster.
"Please, I just want to speak to you for a moment!"
I consider. I could get away from this guy pretty easily.
"Fine what do you want?" I cross my arms, turning around.
"This may sound odd to you but have you ever lived among the stars?" His tone has changed.
I stare at him trying not to show a look of surprise. "Who are you?" I ask although I'm saying this as a demand.
"Can't you tell?"
"What?" What does that even mean.
"How long has it been for you? Around 1000 years?"
I stare at him this time obviously exasperated. "Have we met?" I say with my voice wavering slightly.
All the man did was smile at me."Bye Constance, I'm sure you'll figure it out." And with that, he walked off into the night of the glowing city lights of New York.
It was a strange smile. Endearing maybe? He smiled as if I was an old friend. I tried to think if we had met, if there was a person I had told in the recent years.
There's no one. I would never truly trust anyone. Caleb and Carson don't even know how long I have lived. I can half trust but never fully trust. I know myself better than anyone. Trusting anyone entirely is impossible. There really is only one explanation.
He's a star.
How could I not tell he was a star but he could tell I was one? I have so many questions. I searched the streets for the man but he blended in with every other person.
Just like I do. He easily found me in a crowd and yet I can't find him? Is this some kind of ability I don't have that other stars do?
"Hey! You!" I break out of my daze and look behind me to see that same officer from before. I think his name's Jordan?
I break into a sprint but he's already too close to me. He grabs my wrist. I try to pull away. This time he's wearing gloves. Fire proof gloves. He's smarter than I thought.
But, a star is hotter than any fire on earth will ever be. I burn through his gloves, easily. He cries out in pain.
"I was just teasing you before." I laugh as I run away into the crowd. The sun is starting to rise so it will be easier for him to find me. I run faster towards the warehouse.
• • •
I near the heavy doors of the warehouse and and run into them pushing then open. I look out a small hole in the wall. He didn't catch up with me. I sigh in relief.
Man, that was a close one.
"Oh good, you're back." a familiar voice says from behind. Oh joy.
"Yep. Now if you don't mind Nick, I'd like to take a nap, since some people kept me up all night." I snap at him.
"Jeez Constance, looks like someone got up on the wrong side of the bed." Nick taunts.
I laugh. "Oh yeah, because nobody has ever used that comeback before." Seriously, these humans are so slow.
He goes to say something but I stop him, "Don't. I'm not in the mood for petty spares." I flashed my teeth to get the point across.
My sleeping bag was chard, so I huddled up in my baggy sweatshirt upstairs where I belonged.
I stare out the window with my chin resting on the ledge. The city lights are so bright, I look up but only see a few stars. I sigh and roll over falling asleep with the image of those few stars in my head.
