Both Alex and Lucas will be over around 6:30" I told my mom as I was helping her prepare some snacks for my guests.
"And who is this Lucas guy?" She asked, chopping up some cucumbers.
I took a bite out of one. "He's a new kid. He was born in America, but since his parents are in the military, he lived in Ireland for a while."
"That sounds cool," Mom commented.
"Yeah, I guess," I looked over at the kitchen stove clock to see the time, and it was 6:15. "So, how long are y'all going to be away this weekend?"
"We'll be back by Sunday afternoon. We're leaving tonight around eight. I hate that we have to leave you alone with Asia, especially considering her little stunt the other day. Is Alex sleeping over?"
"No, but Lucas is. Don't worry, we'll stay down here, not that you should be worried or anything," I told her.
"Okay. As long as it's fine with his parents," She took one of the cucumbers she cut and ate one, wiping her hands on a paper towel. "I think that this is enough for right now. If you need to get anything else, you can drive my car to go to the store or go out if you want. Remember to take your medicine tonight, and to turn off all of the lights in the house, and turn on the porch light."
"Mom, when do I ever forget to do any of that stuff?" I asked her.
"Never, but I just felt like reminding you," She smiled and kissed me on the forehead. "Well, I have to finish packing."
"Have fun doing that," I said to her retreating figure.
"Oh, I will!" She responded, as she made her way upstairs.
I went into the den, and plopped down on the sofa, flipping aimlessly through the channels. I hoped that we would actually get some work done today, but knowing the progress that we made in class, we probably weren't the best people to work together.
We'll be fine.
I finally landed on Freeform as Harry Potter Weekend was in full effect with Chamber of Secrets just beginning. I quietly murmured the words along with the characters, fangirling when I saw Draco come on screen. I was always a Draco lover, though also a Harry lover at the same time. It was hard sometimes to decide who I liked more, but considering I literally embodied Hermione, I guess neither unless you were thinking about the numerous fanfics that were out there.
All of a sudden, I heard the doorbell ring, and I hopped up and ran to do the door. It revealed to Alex, who took his shoes upon coming in the house. "Hey girlie."
"Hola, mi amigo," I told him as I closed the door. "Harry Potter's on."
He dropped his stuff down on the sofa when we walked into the den. "I'm guessing Lucas isn't here yet."
"No, he's totally hiding behind the sofa right now pretending to be Dobby," I said sarcastically.
He rolled his eyes, as he ruffled my hair like I was a little kid and he was an annoyed teenager, which pretty summed up our relationship. "Can I get something to eat?"
"I don't know, can you?" I asked him.
"I'm legit a second away from strangling you," He laughed, as he didn't ask again for food, knowing he was welcome to anything he liked. "You know what you are?"
"What?"
"A grammando. I was watching this video, and it was talking about the basics of text, and how there are texting rules that only people under 30 know, while people over thirty actually use grammar in their text messages. In terms of the grammando, though, it's basically that person who corrects everyone's grammar and pisses everyone off because of it."
"Oh then, I'm most definitely a grammando," I laughed, knowing that literally was me. I'm sorry, but it's so hard to not correct someone. If you're not going to say something correctly, then don't bother saying it. We have grammar rules for a reason.
"It's a good thing you're my best friend, though, because I probably would have killed you by now," Alex said as he plopped down beside me with a bowl of grapes. "I'm shocked you're not watching your favorite BTS videos."
"I did, don't worry. I just thought you guys may want to watch something else," I looked down at my phone for the time. "I wonder where Lucas is."
"Maybe he doesn't have a good sense of time?" Alex shrugged.
As if on cue, the doorbell rang. I looked over at Alex as I stood up. "Or maybe he was just late."
"As long as y'all don't fangirl anymore. That was so uncomfortable to watch the other day."
"You're such a big baby!" I yelled at him, as I walked to the door.
"No, just a normal person!"
I laughed as I opened the door to Lucas holding a duffle bag. "What's up?"
"Nothing much," He walked in, then noticed how there were shoes by the door. "I'm guessing your family is one of those families in which you have to take your shoes off when walking in the house considering you're wearing slippers and these look like Alex's shoes."
"Yes, but I can get you some slides if you're not comfortable just walking in socks or barefoot," I told him as I closed the door.
"That sounds great," He said, as he took of his sneakers to reveal his socked-covered feet.
I motioned toward the direction of the den. "If you go right through there, you'll find Alex sitting on the couch. I'll be back in a sec."
Lucas nodded, as I went upstairs real quick to find some extra slides we had laying around for guests with the exception of Alex, who didn't mind walking around without anything on his feet. I grabbed a pair of Nike slides that I had in my room that looked like they could fit Lucas, and ran back downstairs. Lucas was standing in the kitchen, looking around at the numerous pictures of our family and of Asia and I. I tapped his shoulder, and he turned to me a second later. I handed him the slides. "Here you go."
"Gracias," He smiled as he put them on quickly. "These fit perfectly."
"Great," I clapped, then led him to the den. "Okay, do you guys want to watch something until seven, then get to work?"
"Sounds fine," Alex said, his eyes glued to the television.
Lucas waved his hand in front of Alex's eyes, and Alex didn't respond whatsoever. "It's like the dude is brainwashed."
I crossed my arms over my chest. "He's ogling Rupert Grint."
Lucas raised his eyebrows. "It's rare you see people who have a thing for Ron."
I shrugged. "He's cute. Plus, Alex just got a thing for redheads."
"Hm," Lucas said, as he sat down beside Alex and I sat on the other side of him. He looked over at me. "Do you have a type?"
I laughed shortly, and looked towards the television. "Um, why are you asking me this?"
"It's a valid question," Lucas commented, and I saw him look over at Alex in my peripheral vision. "It was a valid question, right?"
Alex nodded, then Lucas looked back at me, looking for an answer. I sighed. "I don't really have a type."
"Oh please. Everyone has a type. Whether it's a height preference, a personality preference, a racial preference."
"Racial preference?"
"Yeah," He poked my arm. "Now, c'mon and tell me your ideal guy."
"I don't really have a racial preference. I think I just want a guy who respects me, makes me laugh, wants to actually do something with his life instead of just wanting to get by, and wants kids one day."
"You want to be a mom one day?" Lucas asked.
I smiled softly to myself. "Yeah. I remember when I was a little girl, I remember wanting to become a lawyer because that way I didn't have to deal with blood or death, but still made a big paycheck that I could raise a big family with. Actually, also when I was little, I had wanted like ten kids. Don't ask why, because I seriously don't know why. Nowadays, I would be fine with five."
Alex scoffed. "That's still too much in my opinion."
"Well, no one asked you, did they?"
Lucas laughed then smiled. "That sounds great."
"Okay, can we start working? Because I can tell that things are about to get really cheesy, and I don't want to be around for it. Plus, this commercial break's going to last at least ten minutes. We can definitely get a lot done in that time period."
"Fine," I said, standing up with a stretch. "Where do you guys want to work? We can work in the kitchen, the dining room, my room, the library..."
"You have a library?" Lucas asked, standing up with a stretch like mine.
I nodded. "Yeah. It's on the third floor."
"You have a third floor?"
"Yes, don't act so shocked," I laughed as I walked into the kitchen to grab some food. "So library it is?"
"Sounds fantastic," Alex commented, making his way to the other staircase that led directly to it.
Lucas looked around in awe before looking over at me. "How many staircases does this house have?"
"Well, the main one is right through the kitchen and dining room. Most people when they come over use that one. It stops on every floor. The one that Alex just used is probably least common one considering the only person who even goes to the library in the family is me, myself, and I. My parents used to read to Asia and I there when we were younger, but ever since Asia decided that she didn't like me or our parents, I'm the only one who ever goes in there anymore with the exception of Alex whenever he's over."
"Your sister?" Lucas looked over at one of the pictures of Asia and I. "How old is she?"
"Fifteen. Two years and a half younger than me."
"So, I'm guessing you're still seventeen then?"
I nodded. "Yep. That'll change on Halloween."
"You have a birthday on Halloween?" His eyes sparkled with excitement. "Damn, that's so cool."
"Eh," I shrugged. "Due to the fact that it's on a holiday, it kind of gets overshadowed."
"At least your birthday isn't on Christmas. One of my friends in Ireland had one on Christmas, and he would like only get two gifts, one for his birthday and one for Christmas."
"Fair point," I walked over to the refrigerator and grabbed a couple of water bottles. "Do you want anything other than water?"
"Do you have any sodas?"
"Yeah, we have Coke, Sprite, and Dr. Pepper," I listed, while holding the refrigerator door open with all the food in my arms.
"Do you need some help, Michelle?" Lucas asked, walking towards me.
"Oh no, I'm fine..."
"No, please let me help..."
"No, it's fine, I got it, you can just get your drink in the bottom...oof," Lucas was standing right in front of me, his arms touching mine, sharing the load of food I had in my arms. I could feel that one of his feet were between both of mine, and we were definitely in a compromising position.
"Jazzy, we're heading out now, call us if you need...OH MY GOSH!" My mom said, making Lucas and I jump apart, hurting ourselves in the process.
I hit my head on the refrigerator door on my way down, as we both were dropping everything on ourselves. My parents ran over to help us, and all I could think about was how freaking embarrassing this was.
My mom cradled my head as she helped me up. "Oh my goodness, sweetie, I'm sorry for frightening you. I just didn't think I would see you in such..."
"Such a compromising position, I know," I waved off her worry as I looked over at Lucas, who was trying to pick up everything. "Um, Mom and Dad, this is Lucas. Lucas, these are my parents."
Lucas looked extremely embarrassed as he looked over at my parents and gave a sympathetic smile. "Hi Mr. and Mrs. Walker."
My mom smiled at him. Nice to meet you, Lucas."
My dad had his eyebrows raised with suspicion. "Who exactly are you?"
"Dad, he's my classmate. He just moved here last week."
"And you invited him over that soon?" Dad looked over at Lucas with a more suspicious expression. "I apologize if I sound rude, but who do you think you are with just coming over here without knowing my daughter that long."
"Mr. Walker, we were just working on an assignment for class..." Lucas looked over at me for help.
"Yeah, Dad, we were just working on a project for our English class. I volunteered my house so we could all work on it. Alex is also apart of our group if that makes it any better."
"So, how long is he going to be over?"
"Um, till Sunday," I muttered.
"What? Speak louder."
"Till Sunday, Dad. Mom already said..."
"Um, no. No. He is not sleeping over. I don't allow it," My dad was furious.
"Dad, nothing's going to happen. Like you said, we don't know each other that well, so nothing will be going on."
"I don't care, Jasmine," Dad smiled sympathetically at Lucas, then had the angry expression when looking at me. "You're not allowed to have any guys here without us around. Do you want what happen last time to happen again?"
I swallowed hard, and hurriedly blinked away the thought Dad put in my mind. "Dad, he's not Justin."
Lucas looked confused but didn't say anything. Dad crossed his arms. "I'm sorry for bringing that up, but I'm sorry if I'm thinking about your well-being."
"Babe, he's just a friend from school. He seems like a nice guy," My mom tried reasoning with my dad, but my dad shook his head.
"So was Justin. And we know how that ended up. Lucas, I'm sorry, but you can't stay over."
"You let Alex sleep over," I defended.
"Alex also is gay. I have an idea that Lucas is not."
Lucas blew a raspberry, not helping the situation. I looked over at him. "Lucas, if you go up those stairs, you'll be directly in the library. I'll be up in a sec."
He looked like he wanted to stay down with me, but didn't argue. He gave a small smile to my parents with a nod and headed upstairs. I rolled my eyes as I looked over at my dad. "Seriously Dad?"
"Jasmine, I'm just looking out for you..."
"I get that, Dad, but don't you think I've learned since the incident with Justin," I broke off, trying to breathe. I hadn't thought about that night in a long time, and I was not about break down over it for the umpteenth time. "Lucas is different. He's just my friend, nothing else."
"I don't care, Jasmine," Dad shot at me.
"Well, you should trust your daughter," I shot back. "Dad, I will be eighteen in three weeks. I think I can take care of myself and make my own decisions. If I think I'm safe with Lucas, then that should be enough. Mom trusts me. Why can't you?"
"It's not you I don't trust," Dad sighed, and dragged me into his arms. I felt Mom brush my hair. "Jasmine, you don't know how much pain your mom and I went through after finding you that night, helpless, and it happening right under our noses. I know you may think that I'm being unreasonable, but if I can stop something before it has the possibility of hurting you or taking you away from your mom and I, I will do so. You know I love you, right?"
"I know, Dad, and I love you too," I pulled apart from him. "If Alex stays over..."
"Jasmine..." Both Mom and Dad warned.
"Fine. I'll tell him he can't stay."
My mom smiled sadly and kissed me on the forehead, giving me a hug. "We love you, sweetie, so, so much."
"I love you guys more," I smiled at them. "You guys have a good trip."
They gave me one last hug, before walking out. I breathed in heavily, and wiped away some tears I hadn't even realized had fallen. I ran to the downstairs bathroom to check myself out, and though I had wiped away the tears, they continued to fall. I know Dad was looking out for my well-being, but did he seriously have to go there. I walked up the main staircase and went into my room to find something to conceal that I had even cried in the first place, not wanting to alarm Alex nor Lucas. Realizing the only thing that would do what I needed was concealer, I walked into Asia and I's bathroom, and went into my makeup drawer to find it.
"What are you doing Jasmine?" Asia asked.
"Trying to find my concealer," I wasn't having much luck.
"Why?"
"It's not like you would care," I said bitterly and reluctantly looked at her. "May I borrow yours?"
She rolled her eyes, and went into her makeup drawer and pulled out a vial of hers. "I heard your little spat with Dad. I may not be exactly fond of you, but that night was horrible for all of us. You're still my big sister, and seeing you in pain like that, still kills me. So, Dad didn't have to go there."
I was shocked at her revelation, but still smiled sadly at her. "I'll be fine."
"You're definitely the strongest girl I know," She gave the smallest hint of a grin as she gave me the concealer. "I was going to tell you that I was hanging out at Hannah's."
I raised my eyebrows at her. "Aren't you grounded?"
"Yes, but it's not like I'm sleeping over. I'll be back in a couple hours," Asia defended.
I thought about my decision hard. I mean if she wasn't sleeping over then it might be fine, but then again, Mom and Dad insisted that she wasn't able to leave the house unless to go to school. "How about we make a compromise?"
Asia sighed and crossed her arms. "What do you have in mind?"
"You can invite Hannah and whoever else for a sleepover; that way, you still get to hang out with them but I can keep my eye on you."
She looked as if she was thinking about it, and nodded. "Sounds like a plan."
"Great," I clapped my hands, making the moment extremely awkward. "Okay, please forget that I just did that."
She gave a small laugh, and I smiled. "Well, if you need me, I'm upstairs in the library."
Asia nodded, and walked in her room. I smiled to myself. That was the first pleasant conversation we had in a long time, and I was genuinely happy about it. Then, in that moment, I had remembered why I had even come in here for and also remembered I had guests upstairs.
I quickly put on some concealer, making sure that I looked as normal as possible, and went back downstairs to gather the snacks and drinks that I had for the boys and I, and walked up the stairs that led to the library. "Hey guys, sorry that took me so long...Oh my gosh, he did not fall asleep."
"He did," Lucas laughed quietly, and looked over at me. "I'm guessing I can't stay over for our Friends binge-a-thon then?"
"Unfortunately no," I gave him a sympathetic smile and held out the food as a peace offering. "Am I stupid in thinking that this make the situation less upsetting?"
"You can never be stupid, Michelle, not one bit. Hell, you're probably the smartest person I've ever met."
I laughed. "That means you haven't met many people at all."
"Haha. Actually, you would be shocked that I've met many people and known them long enough to tell their intelligence. You," He pointed at me. "Are the exception."
"Thanks, Lucas," I commented, and we both ate some of snacks I had brought upstairs. "So, since Alex is sleep, do you want to just start so we can get some stuff done?"
"Whatever you want is fine. I'm in your care."
