"Are you okay?" I jumped at the sound of Riley's voice. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you."
I turned around and sharply said, "What are you doing here?"
"You were taking awhile so I came to see if you left, like I told you not to."
I let out a sigh and said, "I'm sorry for sounding rude. Did you see or hear any of that?"
"I saw Noah's truck leave the parking lot. What happened?" Riley stepped towards me and slid the keys out of my hand and turned towards the trunk, grabbing the box of sparklers that were sitting right there in front.
"We broke up. Or I broke up with him, I mean." Riley found the bag of marshmallows and was shutting the trunk. He turned towards me, with his eyes widened.
"Are you serious?"
"Yeah. But it's whatever. Let's go, I need more alcohol and roasted marshmallows." I started to walk back towards the beach when Riley grabbed my hand, causing me to spin back around.
"Adeline, are you-"
"Yes. I'm fine." I pulled my hand out of his and gave him a small smile. "Come on. Let's go have fun."
We got back to our towels with the stuff from Riley's car. On the way, I stopped by the cooler and grabbed more lemonade and two bottles of kinky. I looked up at Riley and said, "Can you go roast the marshmallows? You know the way I like them. Golden, not burnt."
"Yes ma'am." Riley handed the sparklers to me and took the bag of marshmallows to the bonfire. I turned back towards Jenna and Katie, who were just now finishing their fourth drink.
"So I just broke up with Noah." They both gasped and leaned closer to me.
"What do you mean you broke up with Noah," Katie said in a sharp whisper. I told them both how he came here looking for me and about our argument. By the end, they just sat there in shock. "Wow. I never thought you guys would break up, you guys are the IT couple. You've been together forever!"
"It won't last," Jenna said nonchalantly. Katie gaped at her and I raised my eyebrow. "What, it's true. You're drunk right now and you'll regret it tomorrow. Watch, you'll see. Besides, you guys are totally meant to be."
I shook my head at her and opened another lemonade. "Whatever. Tonight, I'm single." I chugged the drink and tossed the empty bottle to the side. "You know what we should do? We should go surfing. Right now." Katie put her hands up and shook her head, so I looked to Jenna who seemed hesitant but finally gave in. I can always count on her to do crazy things with me, drunk or not.
We found Cody, a guy we know from our class who loves to surf, and asked if he had his surfboards with him. "Always. I only have one with me though. Why?"
"We're gonna go surfing, duh," I said to him.
"Uh.. I don't know. It's dark and I'm guessing you've been drinking."
"I'm fine, Cody! Look at me, I'm fine."
"Alright, if you say so. Just don't lose or break my board. Please." I threw my arms around his neck and said thank you a million times before I let him go. He laughed and walked back to his jeep to grab his surfboard.
"You know, Adeline, he has a point. It's dark out here and you've been drinking. This doesn't seem like the best thing to do right now. Even for me."
"Please, Jenna, I'm fine. I can do it, I know how to surf and swim and I'll be EXTRA careful. You don't have to do it, just record it for me. It'll be epic."
