Zainab rocked her son to sleep on her laps while listening to her mother's scolding. She held her head with one hand and took her nipple from the infant's now open mouth.
"This is exactly why I opposed to the wedding in the first place but you just had to insist" Hajiya bintu hissed for the nth time and sat on her bed. She reached for the jug to serve herself a cup of water but was even more enraged to find it empty.
"Laraba!" She yelled for her house help who arrived almost immediately.
"Have you been eavesdropping on our conversation?" Hajiya Bintu questioned, her eyes narrowing as though she could uncover the truth through the slits they formed.
"No hajiya. I was just on my way to the kitchen"
"Good." She nodded contentedly and suddenly frowned. "Dan uwarki, how many times have I told you to never let the jug stay empty?"
"But...but..hajiya you warned me not to come into this room today unless you called"
"So it's my fault kenan?" Hajiya Bintu shot out hotly and rose to her full towering height. She'd been looking for an outlet for her frustrations anyways.
Thwack! The sound of flesh meeting flesh resounded and even the infant that had fallen asleep was startled and he started to cry.
"You've woken him. Yar banza you've woke my grandson. Get out"
With each sentence she uttered, more slaps preceded it and before five minutes had passed, Laraba's face had received quite a beating and had swollen a bit.
"Better not make me call you back for water" Hajiya Bintu huffed and puffed, her temper a bit eased now that she'd released some of it.
"Mummy please be quiet. Don't wake ameer" Zainab frowned at her mother as she laid her son on the wide bed.
"I have to take a bath before Ameer's dad arrives. I also need to prepare a meal for him dan I know definitely he hasn't eaten"
"How do you know he hasn't eaten with his amarya?" Hajiya Bintu snorted and Zainab halted in front of the bathroom "It's because you care too much that he even has the guts to treat you this way sef" she continued.
"So what do you propose I do kenan?" Zainab turned and sat in front of her mother who smiled widely.
"Finally, you have asked an important question. I knew you would ask ai, but I only let you cry yourself silly earlier." Hajiya Bintu smacked her lips and continued.
"Don't you see the way I've handled your father? The moment you make the mistake of letting a man know you care too much, that's exactly when everything becomes an issue for you because he won't hold you in high regards anymore."
"But kamal is not like that" Zainab protested. She was starting to regret her impulsive behavior a bit. "Kamal loves me a lot.."
"Shut up dan Allah" Hajiya Bintu waved her interjection away. "You've been married for only three years and I've been married for thirty years."
She smiled at the reluctant look on her daughter's face and pulled her closer. "Listen to me, I can even help you handle the other woman sharp sharp"
"Really?" Zainab's interest had finally been tapped.
"Of course. How do you think I've managed to remain the only woman for so long in this house? Just listen to mummy" Hajiya Bintu's smile spread. "Mommy always knows best"
****************Kamal took a deep breath before he entered the house. His father in-law was seated, watching news on the television and hajiya bintu was beside him pressing her phone, her lips coated in red drawn in a fine thin line as though they would disappear.
"Ina wuni Alhaji, Hajiya" he bent down to pay his respects.
"Ai baka ban ajiyarta ba" Hajiya bintu shot. "Is this how you treat my daughter after everything we have done for you in this life? My husband made you into a somebody, from the nobody you were and just when you started to make it, rather than give our daughter a good life, you marry another woman. "
She stood up and placed her hands on her waist. "Did you even love Zainab at all? Did you marry simple because you were coveting our family's wealth? Did you...."
"Hajiya" Alhaji intervened, with a warning tone in his voice.
"Let me finish Alhaji" Hajiya bintu insisted and continued to rain curses on Kamal. "Left to me, my daughter would never go back to your house but what's done is done"
After giving him one last withering dirty look, she snatched her phone with a deep hiss and left the parlour.
"I am really sorry about that Kamal. It's just that everything happened without a warning." Alhaji shifted and cracked his knuckles slowly.
Even though he was apologising, There was a faint scent of threat and intimidation emitting from him.
"All I ask is that you treat my daughter well. That's all that matters really" Alhaji spoke again before Kamal could get a word in.
He could only agree and make more promises that he would never mistreat Zainab. Alhaji was fiercely protective of his daughters and he let them do whatever they wanted as long as they stayed in the line he'd drawn for them. Kamal knew that very well.
Later that evening, as he drove back to keffi with his wife and son in a silent war, he suddenly remembered that before he left, the other lady seemed to have fallen down.
What if she had gotten injured? Or hit her head and bled to death all alone?
Kamal's heart gave a pang and he instinctively agreed to check on her to make sure she was fine.
He would be returning there purely because she was his wife and he has to be responsible for her now, also because she is his friend's sister. Nothing like going there to see if he could have a peek of her body or that he could not get her out of his head or anything.
He glanced at his wife. Yes, as a hot blooded perfectly normal young man, it's only natural to have certain urges and reactions after seeing a naked woman.
He would seal the deal with his wife tonight and get that loose woman out of his head for good!
