chapter 1: unsettling

"I said no, Evelyn. No means no," My dad argued, per usual.

"Please dad! It could save lives! Imagine it!" I said and he shook his head. "I don't care Evelyn. I'm not losing you."

"Mom, please?" I begged and she shook her head, "Ev, you're too young. You need to learn control."

"I'm fine," I said standing up, and moving across the table with my powers. "See?" I added taking my mom's fork and sitting down at my spot.

"I said I don't care. Evelyn it's not up for debate. Go clear your plate then go to bed," my mom finally stated, she looked furious.

"Fine," I said standing up and throwing away my breakfast.

I quickly went up stairs ready to do the unimaginable.

"It was an accident, I'm sorry, I love you." I wrote on a post it note.

I grabbed a coat and climbed down the the fire exit, and ran through time.

Except, when I was through. Everything was burning

and I was alone.

As I walked through the debris of what was my home, I noticed a few things.

One, there was a boy. He looked older than me, but was clearly younger.

My mother stopped showing up in pictures. There was a wall of pictures, I was a couple, but mostly the boy, my dad and my mom.

Except my mom was only in a few. Maybe 3, when the boy was young.

Finally, the mansion across from me. It seemed ordinary from the outside, but without the front wall, the interior was revealed.

The damages looked similar to mine, all burnt or still on fire.

I walked over to the mansion, looking through the house. I had never been allowed to visit.

The surrounding walls were ruined, all of the furniture was scorched.

The difference between my house and this house, was that there was bodies. Older, and strangers. They were all crushed under the stairs, or pieces of the walls.

I was alone.

Or so I thought.

It was until I heard crying, different from the crackling of the fires.

Near a pile of bricks from the old house was a boy, young.

"You made it?" I asked sitting next to him.

"I was too late."
