chapter 3: unhappily
"I don't understand how you can be so damn happy. This is the apocalypse, we're not going to survive," Five said chewing on a granola bar.
"I love the commentary. I really found it necessary," I said giving a smile.
"You can stop the bull-shitted fake smiles now, Ev. They can't get us much further," Five replied and I frowned crossing my arms over my chest.
"What's with the pessimism?" I asked as we walked away from a huge department store with a cart full of food.
"I just, I feel so dumb. For leaving everyone. It was so selfish," Five answered avoiding eye contact. "And you think I don't? I left my mom and dad for this shit. Talk about a failed vacation." This made him laugh.
"Everything is so fucked up," Five said and I nodded, walking closer to him, to help push the cart.
"I've never seen so many dead people. I feel like it's all my fault," I added and he shrugged, "couldn't have been your fault. You were never there. You skipped at least 20 years."
"I know, but what if we really did cause this. Or someone like us. Born in the same circumstances. Imagine it," I replied and Five shook his head.
"It wasn't you Evelyn. You and me both know that you could never do this," Five said shoving the rest of the granola bar into his mouth.
"My bet is that it was Luther. He's always been too strong," Five continued managing to not spit out half of the granola bar.
"He could never. He's too scared. He would want to protect Allison if anything," I answered. Five had described all of his siblings. The only sibling that sounded remotely like me was Klaus. A part-time druggie.
"You're right. It wasn't me, so who else?" Five asked and I shrugged. "What about Vanya?"
"Vanya is or was ordinary. There was nothing different about her. I wish I could say she was different but she isn't," Five added and I nodded. "But what's the coincidence that she was born on the same day in the same circumstances?"
"Sorry if I'm annoying you, Five. I can be annoying," I added and he gave a small smile, "you're fine Evelyn. And I'm not sure maybe it was just unlucky."
"What if your dad was hiding her? Saving her?" I asked. I was being a little too curious, but I wanted to learn all about him and his family. If I was going to be stuck with someone for the rest of my life, Five was going to be that person.
"Good point, but why wouldn't he exhibit her like he did to the rest of us?" Five asked back and I shrugged. "Maybe she was too strong. Your dad couldn't control her to he simply left her alone."
"Maybe. But no one will ever know now," Five responded pessimistically. I frowned pushing the shopping cart with Five.
"Hey," Five said nudging me. I looked up at him and he smiled. "At least you have me?"
"At least I have you."
