2: Short Conversations & Long Rides.

Instead of time going by in a blur like in the movies, I found that time actually went by slower than it had once before. The wait for the concert was agonizing, but I couldn't bring myself to complain. If holding a chance that many girls would kill for meant waiting, I'd wait. However, I found that the wait for the actual concert wasn't nothing compared to the wait on the day of it. Since Jade and I weren't due at Hailee's until two, I decided to spend the morning at the boardwalk with my nephew Lucas and my niece Lyndie. After waltzing in and out of the stores lining the boardwalk and taking a ride on the carousal and the Ferris Wheel, I dropped Lyndie and Lucas off at Keshia's and swung by the Glass Patio, a small coffee shop located near the center of main street, to pick up an Iced Mocha and the girl that made them for a living.

"Hard day?" I asked as Jade climbed in the passenger seat. Her endless brunette waves peaked out from underneath a black visor and she looked similar to a coffee bean from her management's choice of wardrobe. I'd half expected her to change before I arrived, but I knew that she would as soon as she walked through the door to Hailee's room. Jade, being the free spirit she was, wasn't a fan of uniforms or anything else that didn't cater to her rebellious line of clothing for that matter.

"No, it was actually peaceful aside from the fact that I couldn't help but overhear our names mentioned in over three different conversations," Jade said exasperated.

"What's up?" I asked as I raised an eyebrow. Despite a few minor problems throughout the years, the three of us had managed to stay out of the drama that accumulated in every high school. There were the rare occasions where we hadn't like when Jade had called Bianca Reynolds out in Honors Chemistry or when Hailee had gone face-to-face with Emily Newman in front of the entire cafeteria during Sophomore year, but they had all been resolved within seconds.

"Nicole Davis came in earlier with two other freshmen from First Flight. I couldn't help but overhear our names along with One Direction and several negative comments throughout the duration of their visit," Jade explained as she shook her hair out of the visor.

"Erin's little sister?" I raised an eyebrow, "I'm sure it's nothing but jealousy. It's not like Erin missed out on anything major. She's already preordered tickets to the concert this winter,"

"Does that really matter?" Jade asked, "Her little sister purposely came to the Patio with her friends today so that I could overhear their conversation. If I had been wearing anything other than this ratchet coffee bean costume, I would've been able to call her on it,"

"But you weren't," I interrupted, "Which means that she succeeded in what she came to do,"

"Which was?" Jade asked.

"Ruining your day," I said.

"She didn't ruin my day," Jade said, "She only made the beginning of a beautiful day a little more unpleasant than it should have ever been,"

"Really?" I smiled, "Because it seems like she succeeded,"

"Over my dead body," Jade scoffed before crossing her arms and finding interest in the passing scenery. I laughed in triumph as I hit the dial on the stereo and an rhythmic beat blasted throughout the interior of my tiburon. A smile even spread across Jade's face when a certain boy band member's voice came on. "I'll lift you up, I'll never stop; you know I'll take you to another world.."

After singing along to three other songs and reaching the high note in "Gotta Be You," I'd pulled into Hailee's driveway and parked behind a bright blue convertible that had stolen my usual spot. Hailee had mumbled something about it belonging to one of Matthew and Mason's friends before kicking the door to her room open and gesturing to the open closet where our purchases from the day before had been stored overnight.
