Ch.1
Sophia’s POV
I took a bite out of the cake, still dubious about why it had been given to me. It had a strange but familiar bitter-sweet taste, but I couldn’t put my finger on where I remembered it from. Then it hit me, how could I be so stupid?! I gave myself a mental face-palm and before I could stop myself the words came tumbling out.
“I’m sorry! It was me who ate the missing toffy orbs! I couldn’t help myself, you know how much I love sweet things!” They stared at me with faces of utter disappointment.
The girls in my dorm had been bugging me all week about who I liked. I had told them repeatedly that there was no one I thought of in that way but they kept persisting using all kinds of methods to get the truth out of me. Their most recent attempt being an ‘Actuality Spell’. It’s a spell which is cast upon a substance (in this case a cake) and when consumed any secrets or lies the victim has told will be revealed.
“We already know that!” Whined Chelsea.
“I guess she really just doesn’t like anyone.” Said Bell.
“I don’t believe it! Sophia Hummingbird, if you don’t confess right now I’m going to suspend all sweets and lollies from the dorm for a whole week!” Melissa threatened with a serious tone. She’s the dorm head but also my best friend come personal supervisor and major busybody.
I sighed, “I’ve told you before many times, I don’t have a crush and even if I did he would never like me back.”
"Of course he would!" Said Chelsea.
"Sophia, you are really pretty!" Added Melissa and I felt my face heat up and turn pink.
Today we were all meant to be studying for our upcoming Potions exam but we just seemed too tired to do anything.
If you haven’t already figured it out, my name is Sophia Hummingbird and I’m an 16 year old, Second Class, Free-hand witch. I attend the Elite Witch Academy with my friends Melissa Dove, Bell Robin and Chelsea Linnet. Here at the academy there’s a system for the skill levels of witches, you start off being a Third Class witch and eventually work your way up to becoming First Class. There are two common types of witches: A Free-hand witch, who specializes in using hand motions and signs to cast spells. And a Verbal Witch who casts spells using verbal incantations. Bell is a Free-hand witch like me but Chelsea and Melissa are both Verbal witches.
Tap, tap, tap. The sound of footsteps broke the peaceful silence. Two Third Class witches entered the lounge.
“That was so exciting!” One of them squealed.
“Yeah, especially the part when he was explaining how the Magia Gem had been stolen!” Replied the other one.
Magia Gem? It sounded to me like there had been some sort of storyteller spreading fables. I had heard about the Magia Gem before but only in the children's tales Mum told me when I was little. I used to lie on my bed just before I went to sleep and she would stroke my light blonde hair as her grey-blue eyes sparkled in the my moonlit room. People say my eyes look just like hers but I don’t think they are anywhere near as beautiful.
The Magia Gem is supposedly a gem which brings unimaginable power to it's owner and of course many battles between witches and warlocks have been fought over it. I’ve always believed in it until recently when I grew out of the silly children’s tales.
Listening to the girls giggle and chat a bit longer I started to grow curious of the storyteller and why he was telling these fables.
