Ch.4
Sophia’s POV
I don’t know what he was expecting but I’m not anything special. I mean, I don’t have the worst skills in the world but not the best either. Although, I was actually looking forward to seeing what he could do. So much so that I had kept shooting him quick glances during lessons today and I think he knew it too because when the lunch bell rang and I was walking out the door he had smirked at me. And now here I was making my way up to the roof right on 4:00 like he had asked.
The door at the top of the stairs flew open before I could get there and Luke’s grinning face beamed down at me.
“Come on, hurry up, lets go!” He said enthusiastically. ‘Go where?’ I thought but didn’t question him and hurried up the rest of the steps.
“What are we doing?” I asked.
“You’ll see.” He said still smiling and handed me a piece of material. It felt like silk and was a blueish shade of silver which matched my eyes brilliantly.
“Hold it still.” He said, so I did. He held his hand above the cloth and closed his eyes, his jaw clenched and I could tell he was concentrating. I could faintly see the magic energy flowing through the air towards the material, it must be using up a lot of his strength.
“Done!” He said and his eyes flicked open.
“What is it?” I said, just as he held it out in front of him.
“A cape.” He said triumphantly.
“A cape?” I asked confused.
“A cape!” He replied and turned to look me in the eye. “This is a present from me to you, look after it!” And he handed it back to me.
“What did you do to it?” I said still wandering what sort of spell he cast on it.
“Well, when do you wear a cape?” He asked.
“Ummmm... Wear a cape day?” I answered sarcastically.
He looked at me bluntly and said, “No. When you fly of course!”
“But I can’t fly.” I said.
“That’s what the cape is for!” He said. “Try it on!”
I wrapped the cape around my shoulders and tied it up at the front. If he had cast a flying spell on the cape, how am I meant to make it fly? I don’t use Possessive magic like him, I can’t control it.
I spoke my thoughts aloud, “How do I make it fly? I’m not a Possessive witch.”
“Not yet but I’m going to teach you.” He said, “It’s only a simple spell so I think you’ll probably be able to master it.”
I’d heard of witches learning more than one type of magic before but only very rarely. That wasn’t going to stop me though. “Sweet!”
He picked up his own cape off the floor and put in on, it was silky like mine but black in colour.
“I’m going to show you how the pro does it and then I’ll teach you. Here I go.” He turned away and took a run up towards the edge of the roof. Suddenly his feet lifted off the ground and he was flying, his black, shiny cape flowing behind him. I couldn’t wait till I could do that!
“Come on down and teach me! Stop showing off!” I shouted as he did a couple of backflips.
He landed on the ground softly with his cape still hovering in the air. “Am I awesome or what!”
“Fine. It was pretty sweet.” I admitted and shoved him lightly in the chest a tingling felling running up my arm as I did.
“Ok, so you’re not going to get this straight away.” He started. “You’ll have to practice, a lot. Start off by imagining your feet lifting off the floor and you floating in the air with the cape flowing on your back. Will the cape to start flying.”
“Right.” I concentrated closing my eyes. I pictured the cape flying in the wind and hovering of the ground. I could practically feel the breeze and the cape in the air. Opening my eyes I realised I wasn’t just imagining it. By now the roof was far below and Luke stared up at me with shock in his eyes. All I could do was smile widely and think about how Luke had just said that it would take a while.
“How was that?” I said as I touched down on the roof.
“Surprising! How did you do that?” He asked.
“I don’t know, I’ve been doing things a lot easier lately.” I answered, remembering the force field in the hall.
“I’m impressed. Lets leave it there for today, I see you tomorrow.” He said and turned to walk off.
“See-ya!” I called after him and walked towards the stairs.
Wait, why am I going to the stairs? I can fly! I jogged to the edge and looked over, it was a long way down, I was 12 stories up. I concentrated and did exactly what I did before. I fell down towards the ground and I waited for my cape to start working and lift me into the air. But it didn’t. I started to panic. Why aren’t I flying???
