It was now or never.
I crept carefully down the stairs and tiptoed down the hallway. I made it to the back door and eased its key into the lock.
I had to be careful. I had to be quiet. One false move and it was all over. If I was caught, all would be ruined.
I succeeded in getting the door open but winced when the hinges squeaked, the noise doubly loud in this silence. I froze, heart pounding, straining my ears for any sound of movement from upstairs. Was that a floorboard creaking?
No...it was just my father snoring his head off.
Good. Let it stay that way.
Satisfied the coast was clear, I slipped through the door, swift and silent as a shadow, and out into the London night air.
It was a chilly night out, the air rather damp and I could see that a light fog hung in the atmosphere. I drew my coat tighter around me to guard myself against the dwindling temperature as I walked quickly along, a particular route in mind.
Surely it wasn't a good idea for one such as me to be wandering out alone as late as this. Who knew what might happen - and in this fog too. But I wasn't afraid. The night was his domain. I knew no harm would come to me.
When the fog comes rolling in, just keep your feet upon the path, he would say.
As I neared my destination, I gazed around for any sign of a familiar figure but saw no one. I ventured further along the dark street, deeper and deeper into a network of winding shadowy alleyways, waiting...waiting...
But still nothing.
Had I got the wrong night? Had he? What if he'd forgotten? No, no, he wouldn't do that. He never forgets anything.
Though before I could begin to grow too worried, I spotted something at the far end of an alley.
There he was.
