Once we were done settling in with the fire lit we just lay on our mats, taking in the rest of the day light.
It would get easier. Wouldn't it?

Harper's POV
Daylight was beginning to fade and the night was dawning upon us. I was really nervous about my first night in the jungle. The thought of spiders and other creepy crawlies crawling over you and next to you whilst you're sleeping brought shivers to my spine.
Joe and I were in the middle of cooking the rice and beans. Liza and Jack were getting some more wood before it turned completely dark and Zoe was trying to make the space more cosy looking. She was putting so much effort into it which to be honest was nice to see. Just by her trying her hardest to make it look nice already made the whole space feel better. She decorated certain areas with some leaves and vines, making it look rather pretty.
"I'll get the dishes now so we're ready" I said to Joe.
"Ok, i'll just keep stirring this" he laughed. "I have a job"
I laughed and got all the dishes for us, putting them out carefully so no one would trip over them. Joe and I finished cooking the beans and rice and I served them up as evenly as I could.
"Right guys, food's ready" I said.
Zoe and Liza brought a few sleeping mats close to each other so we could all sit together. Zoe sat on my mat with me, Liza and Jack sat on Liza's mat and Joe sat in the middle of both.
We all took our first mouthful of rice and beans, and lets just say I wished so badly it was my last.
"Oh god this is awful" Joe said, screwing his face up as he chewed.
"It's so um" Zoe said as she tried to describe the taste.
"Bland" Jack commented, finishing for her.
"Well that's a polite way of putting it" Liza said chewing.
As much as I hated the taste of them, I battled my way through the dish. It was our only source of food after all. We needed to keep our strength up if we wanted to do our best in the jungle.
"Well um yeah that's the meal done with" I said awkwardly, trying not to show my negative side.
"Thank god it's over" Jack said.
"We'll get used to it" I said, trying to make everyone feel more at ease. "This is all new to us, especially the food situation. We're just all gonna need some time"
"I don't know if I will adjust to be honest" Zoe sighed. "This is so out of my comfort zone"
We all got up. Jack and Joe started to clear away the dishes and put them aside since we'd be washing them the next day as we'd have light then, and Liza was putting the moved mats back in their places. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Zoe wipe her eyes and a few seconds later she walked to the toilet area, AKA, the dunny.
The dunny was a vile area. The sight of it was nearly as bad as the smell. The fact that you had to empty it yourself too made it even more revolting. We all said we'd never go to the dunny unless we needed to for the toilet over how disgusting it was, but by the looks of Zoe, I could tell she wanted to hide away. I felt so bad for her and I wanted to do my best to help. So quietly and without a fuss, I followed her to the dunny.
As I got round the corner after the short walk, I heard sniffles. I turned to see Zoe wiping her eyes and crying quietly.
"Zoe?" I said softly.
She immediately looked up and wiped her eyes in a flash.
"Sorry um I just needed the toilet" she said, trying to cover up her tears.
"It's ok to be overwhelmed" I said, walking up to her. "Everyone else is too. But we all have each other and we'll get through it together"
"You seem so put together though" she said as more tears rolled down her cheeks.
I laughed lightly.
"I'm really not" I smiled. "I'm just trying to stay positive. If I manage to get a smile on people's faces then the experience may get a bit easier"
Zoe smiled at me slightly and wiped her tears.
"You're a really good person, Harper" she said.
"Thanks" I chuckled. "So are you"
"You're really making a difference" she smiled. "You've tried to make things sound better, you've made everyone laugh and you've stopped me crying nearly straight away. And trust me that last one is a biggie"
We both laughed lightly.
"You're making a difference too though" I told her, smiling. "You put your heart and soul into making our camp look better. That was lovely of you. And it worked. It feels nicer so it's putting a smile on everyone's faces"
"Really?" Zoe asked, looking shocked.
"Yes really" I smiled and put my hands on her shoulders comfortably. "Have some faith in yourself, ok? We all play a part in our camp. We all make a difference and we can all help each other"
"Thanks Harper" she smiled.
"No problem" I smiled.
Zoe gave me a hug and I returned it.
After a few more minutes we both headed back to the main part of camp.
"Where did you two scutter off to?" Jack chuckled.
I saw out of the corner of my eye Zoe look at me, the sort of the look as to say please don't tell anyone about what happened.
"Just around the toilet area" I smiled.
"Well, we better see how these mats are for sleeping on" Joe said, looking skeptical.
We all got on our mats and lay down, pulling our meager blanket each over us. Let's just say it wasn't the comfiest.
"Well night guys" I said. "Although today's been hard i've really enjoyed it and I couldn't ask for a better group of people to share it with"
"Me too" Zoe said.
"Me three" Joe said.
"Me four" Liza said.
"Me um five? I think" Jack said laughing. "It is five isn't it?"
We all laughed.
"Yes Jack well done" Joe laughed. "It's five"
"Night guys" I said settling down.
"Night" they all said back.
You could say that the first night didn't turn out too bad.
End of part 8
A/N:
Hi guys. I actually really enjoyed writing this part. If only the happiness could be real; today I lost my dog, Rory. He was put to sleep today. Although he's free now I still miss him so much. Thanks for reading and I love you all! Well, until next time!
