Androids were made to be exactly like humans in every way possible. On the outside. On the inside, however, they were made to be like cats (Um kamski wut-). They may look human, but they're really just oversized cats. They nuzzle, meow, growl, hiss, and purr. They have a special biocomponent called the 'purr modulator'. Connor hated it. He hated that he had to purr, he hated that it's necessary, and he hated that he was made fun of for it. But for now, let's go back to when the 'incident' happened.
Connor was at his desk working, trying very hard to stay awake. He was trying to solve an androcide (yes I will call them androcides now) case that he has been working on non-stop for the past 36 hours. He was tired, but he was determined to solve this case. As his eyes tried to close again, Hank finally noticed how sleep deprived Connor actually was.
"Maybe you should take a break, Con." Hank suggested. "You've been working pretty hard on this case."
"Can't...sleep now." Connor mumbled tiredly. "Need to...finish." He concluded before finally passing out on his desk, making Hank chuckle when he realised Connor started purring in his sleep. Hank always found his robo-son's purr adorable, but not all humans thought so, one being Detective Gavin Reed. Reed walked passed Hank and Connor's conjoined desks, but stopped when he heard the purring. He turned to what - or who - was making this noise.
"Androids purr?!" Gavin whisper-shouted, loud enough to rouse Connor from his sleep. Connor looked up at Gavin confused, until he realised his purr modulator started in his sleep. He swallowed and cleared his throat, stopping the purring, before looking down at his desk, embarrassed.
Connor hated purring in public. If he was with other androids, like Markus or North, he was okay with it, if he was alone with Hank, he wouldn't care if he purred or not. But in public, Connor tried to avoid it-for this reason specifically.
"What the heck, tin-can?! I thought a year ago you androids were trying to prove you're human too, then you pull something like that?!" Gavin yelled. Connor whimpered and curled in on himself only slightly, but enough for Hank to intervene (finally).
"Back off, Gavin!" Hank snarled. Gavin just yelled one more insult before retreating to his own desk. Hank turned back to Connor, noticing tears in the androids eyes. "Hey, Con, you alright?"
Connor just nodded and got back to work without saying another word.
As the day went on, Hank noticed Connor was a lot more silent than usual. No talking, no purring, no growling. Nothing. Home wasn't much different either. He and Connor would normally watch TV, Hank watching a basketball game or something, and Connor nuzzling into his side, purring. But that's the thing, Connor still wasn't purring. Hank ran his fingers through Connor's hair, which normally got him to purr, but still nothing. Eventually Connor got up to make Hank his dinner, after he finished, while Hank ate, Connor went to lay down on the couch, completely exhausted from the lack of sleep, but what Hank found even weirder was that Connor wasn't purring like he normally did when he 'went in status' as Connor would say. It's freaking sleep, end of story. Hank was worried Connor was still upset about what Gavin said earlier that day, but didn't dwell on it too much. He went to sleep, thinking about different ways to murder Gavin if he truly hurt Connor's feelings.
Connor awoke the next day, noticing a slight burning sensation in his throat where his purr modulator was. Maybe repressing my purr isn't such a great idea. Connor thought. He got up and fed Sumo before getting ready for work like he did every morning, but he noticed the burn was gradually getting worse.
Connor and Hank arrived at the precinct, but before Connor could leave the car, Hank stopped him.
"Why haven't I heard you purr since Gavin insulted you?" The police lieutenant asked.
