“I need some white man’s foot!” Marissa yelled out ingredients to the poor Desiree, who was running out of breath in her gathering between the different shelves.
“White man’s foot?” Desiree turned around with her arms already full of plants and bottles and gave Marissa a questioning look.
“Shit, sorry it is plantain.” Marissa tried to calm herself, but the man on the table was starting to shiver from the loss of blood. She had to work faster, or he wouldn’t make it. Desiree grabbed the last ingredient and ran back to Marissa’s side. Marissa started chopping and tearing leaves and roots, putting them in her small table-top cauldron. The ingredients started to bubble and flow through the air with a fragrant sent filling the room. The man on the table, who had been unconscious the whole time moved his head and groaned in pain.
“Oh my god!” Desiree shrieked and quickly stepped back from the table. As she went back her hand hit one of the bottles sending it crashing to the floor.
“Dez! That was the last of the blood oil.” Marissa couldn’t feel more helpless as she carefully tried to pick up the pieces of glass and look at the amount of liquid left on them, to see if she could salvage just enough for now.
Desiree knelt beside Marissa and pushed the pieces of broken glass away, which caused Marissa to give her a hated glare. “Blood oil won’t help anyway.”
“I know my potions Dez, I know what…” Before she could finish, Desiree roughly picked her up and pulled her to her feet. “Have you gone mad?!”
“Look.” Desiree said as she reached over and moved a piece of blood-stained blonde hair from in front of his ears. Marissa gasped as she saw what her friend was trying to show her.
“He is Fae.” Marissa said.
“Yea, like I said.” Desiree said.
Marissa rolled her eyes at her grumpy friend and looked back at the wounded man on the table. Most fae can hide the points on their ears, but being that this one was injured, she wondered if that was the reason, they were present. She wandered back to the living room and picked her mother’s grimoire back up. “Fae potions…” She frantically started flipping through the pages.
“What are you doing?” Desiree asked.
“He is too injured, and his body is taking too long to heal itself, I need to find something that will help him speed up the self-healing.” Marissa said as she continued to flip.
Desiree yanked the book of shadows from her hands. “Are you crazy?”
“Give me the book back Dez.” Marissa held her hand out and patiently waited for her friend to return it.
“He is Fae. You can’t be crazy enough to even want to save him, right?”
“Dez, I love you, but if you don’t hand me back my book, I will poison your cat the next time you go out of town.” The hurt look in Desiree’s eyes made Marissa feel guilty.
“You wouldn’t dare!” Desiree sounded like she was about to cry.
“No, no I wouldn’t, but Dez I have to see if I can save him.”
“HE IS FAE!” Desiree screamed. “They are our enemies, the reason we hide away in this stupid valley. You can’t really want to save him. They are the reason your mother…” She stopped herself when she saw the look of misery in Marissa’s eyes.
“Desiree, I know, but I can’t let him die. My mother wouldn’t have. You always say I am like her, then let me do what she would have done.” Marissa pleaded. Despite her beliefs, Desiree could never deny Marissa what she wanted when she looked so pitiful, so she handed the book over to her.
“Fine, but I can’t be here any longer.” Desiree said.
To her surprise, Marissa hugged her tightly. “I understand Dez, be careful.”
“You be careful.” Desiree said as she hugged Marissa back and quickly left the cabin. Marissa knew the stories about the hatred between fae and witches, but looking at the bleeding man on the table, she knew what she had to do. “Astra!” As soon as Marissa yelled for him, Astra appeared seemingly out of nowhere right in front of her. The small black specks in his yellow eyes seemed to gleam in the sunlight as he turned to looked at her. Marissa quickly knelt in front of him and placed the book on the floor. “I know you were my mother’s familiar, help me save this man.”
Astra sat for a moment just staring at the book in front of him, then he used his nose to turn the pages one by one. Marissa tried to stay calm as she watched the cat slowly turning the pages, but her eyes kept wandering to the man on the table. The white shirt he was wearing, was now almost soaked through with blood. His skin was starting to look pale. He seemed to not have much time left.
Astra meowed loudly, bringing Marissa’s attention back to him and the book. Marissa took one look at the page and was shocked. “A magic transfer? Astra, how will this help?” All Astra did was place his paw on the book and meow again, before leaving to go to his cushion. Marissa grabbed the book and started reading the small inscription on the page. “For a witch to transfer magic, she must be willing to give up some of her power to the one receiving it. In nature, such contracts are to be sealed with a…” Marissa gasped. “You want me to what?!” She screamed in Astra’s direction. Astra simply yawned and turned in the direction that wouldn’t face her anymore.
“Oh, you infuriating cat.” Marissa grumbled as she grabbed the book and ran over to the man still on the table. “You must envision yourself giving them the power through the contact. Imagine a blue light flowing from you to them. It is important not to lose concertation or the transfer will fail.” Marissa placed the book at the end of the table and moved to where the man’s head was. “Don’t think about it Marissa. It doesn’t mean anything. It is just to save his life. Only you will know about it later. Ok…1…2…” Marissa shut her eyes tight and quickly kissed the bleeding stranger.
In her mind she imagined a small blue light flowing from her lips to his. “Ouch!” She yelled as she placed her fingers to her sore lips. “Was I supposed to feel a shock like that?” As she searched the book to see if it said anything about it, a hand wrapped roughly around her throat, and started pushing her to the nearest wall behind her.
“What the hell did you do witch?!” The man was no longer unconscious, and his eyes swirled angrily as he looked down at her.
Marissa could tell by the fresh tan look to the man’s skin that the spell had obviously worked. Even though he was nearly choking her to death, the man was handsome. His eyes were the most beautiful purple color, and his shaggy blonde hair was a wonderful contrast against the caramel color of his skin. For a moment, she was lost in the beauty of him, but he quickly knocked her back to reality, by flicking her in the forehead. “Ouch, is that how you thank someone who saved you?” Marissa was annoyed by his behavior.
“Saved me? How exactly did a witch do that?” Just as he asked the question, Marissa’s body went limp and started to fall, out of instinct, Jin caught her in his arms. A cat hissed loudly from across the room. “No, you idiot, I didn’t kill her…at least I don’t think.” Jin looked nervously down at the girl in his arms. “Why would a witch save a fairy anyway?”
