Lizzie's POV:
The interior of the Institution sparked with glamour, beginning with a full-sized studio and expanding to a wrap-around porch. In my opinion, it's almost as if a multi-millionaire may have once lived there with the way it was set up.
My sisters and I continued searching the building, hoping to find the answers to our questions about the Institution. Silence filled the room's capacity as we each were sitting at a wooden desk spread across the room. I heard Rebekah's voice ring through the buildings walls. "Guys, I found something!" Rebekah motioned for Rachel and I to look at a piece of paper she had found in a mailbox placed on the outside floor. "It's a note. And Its addressed to us three. Should we read it? It's from Aunt Zoe," Rebekah spoke.
A couple of years ago, when my sisters and I were told that our Aunt Zoe had passed, we were in utter denial. Hunger, hydration, hygiene , and social lives became less important to each of us each day we were without her. Soon enough, we became tired of missing our Aunt and learned to take things slow in hope of moving on. She taught us everything we need to know to keep us safe. Still, there's stuff even our Aunt Zoe didn't know- things we have to learn through experience. She certainly didn't teach us how to manage grief, but she did teach us what it feels like.
Rebekah and Rachel seemed to disappear into the adrenaline pumping from the idea the note conveyed. I slightly shifted and began to read the note aloud:
Dear Rebekah, Rachel, and Lizzie,
The institution doesn't need me anymore , it needs you three. You may not understand what this means right now, but once I'm gone, the Nephalem Institution will be abandoned. I know this is a lot to ask of you , but I need you to take my place in the world. I need you to protect your kind. Nephalems. Without you, the Nephalem species will fail to thrive, with little to no chances of surviving. Promise me you'll do this, please. I love you, and I know you three will achieve many things in life. Be patient, and always believe in yourselves as well each other.-All my love, Aunt Zoe.
We all looked at each other with puzzled looks evidently flooding our faces. "No, no," Rebekah exclaimed slowly, confusing Rachel and I when she doesn't say anything else.
"How are we supposed to save others when we can barely save ourselves," Rachel asked to break the silence. "Being broken doesn't necessarily mean you're in danger, it just means that a new heart is ready to be accepted. Rachel, I miss her as much as you do, but we can't hold on to that for the remaining of our life, we have to come to acceptance. This may be our best chance to do that. Together," I laced with natural confidence, knowing it's the truth.
I pivoted my head over to Rebekah, looking for any sign of emotion. I was numb at that point, but knew my sisters needed me. I knew I had to help make sure nothing got in the way of our goals, especially feelings.
Snapping back to the present, I stretched my arms out wide, bringing the three of us into a group hug. A false smile was presented on my face, I was sure, but I hoped neither of them noticed and I eventually let go of the embrace. "Come on, we should go back to scouting around the Institution."
"We are so totally going to get the cops on us for ditching school," Rachel said, mischievously laughing at the end. As if the thought of school never came to mind, we ran out of the institution with wide eyes, continuing our mission. Feeling the wash of adrenaline pumping in blood, realization hit us.
"You guys have a map or something," I dumbly questioned, uncertain of where we were headed. No one answered and instead kept going until eventually reaching an entrance to what looked like a mine. All three of us exchanged profound expressions, slithering into the mine, bravely.
Is that what destiny feels like? For random things to happen and sometimes later making sense? We weren't supposed to find an Institution, we were supposed to find a school. What about finding a home? What's a home without childhood memories? At that point, each of them felt their childhood was only just then beginning. Was it?
