Rachel's POV:
My mind flashed back to the previous night. I had been scared that I failed them and had left them alone in the dark mine. They're gone- and it's all my fault.
I paced back and forth between my window and my door, constructing a plan to get them back. They could be anywhere, I thought. Determined to find them no matter what, I started running towards the mine with tears flooding my reality. I was supposed to protect them. I tried sifting the grim emotions away, worried it would wreck my agenda. There's no use. I might already be too late. My thoughts kept swirling around like an ice storm until I finally reached the mine.
"Rebekah, Lizzie?" I kept walking down the stone pathway down to the library section of the mine. To my dismay, there was no response. I called for them again, hoping they were there and just couldn't hear me. It felt like the floor was shaking beneath me, but it was just my legs. What do I do?
Then it hit me. I remembered that when I searched every inch of the house for them, I didn't see their phones. I decided I'd call Lizzie, then Rebekah if I had to. It rang four times, then someone on the other line picked up. The sound of maniacal laughter tangled itself into my hearing.
"Hello? Lizzie?"
The response was an almost cheerful sigh.
"Ah, you're Rachel huh? Your mother talked about you the most. Too bad you and your sisters screwed up and there's no hope for you now. How does that feel?"
"And who the hell are you?" My heart raced at the thought of my mother. I wanted to know what she was talking about but figured I wouldn't feed into her possible lies.
"Eh, you could say I'm a friend of the family, " The woman on the other line cracked up. "Where are my sisters? Tell me now and I'll resist the temptation to rip out your throat without having to even touch you, " I threatened with confidence. Anyone who messes with the only family I really have in my life is the closest thing to dead to me. The woman laughed hysterically like she was listening to the funniest podcast ever.
"You know who I am, so you also know what I'm capable of right?" Her hysterical laughing continued, and I decided tracking the phone call using my angelic powers would be more useful than this psycho. I closed my eyes and listened to the woman's horrid voice, waiting to find where the sound waves were coming from. Moments later, the woman had spoken again, making it easier for me to locate her. I'd heard her hang up on me, but I had located them.
The woman had taken them to a dark, unlit area that I didn't automatically recognize, but then I realized.
They're in our Aunt Zoe's old house.
I'd been running a lot and my legs killed me, but my sisters are worth more than the world. I launched full speed towards her house, and eventually, my wings came to my assistance. Almost there. Knowing I was close to my destination, I prepared myself for devastation.
And devastation it was.
