We were rushed off the bus but Dave never once left my side, as if comforting me from war jitters. I mean. I have never fought in war before but this wasn't my first time holding a gun. I felt nauseous at how the others were okay with this, I shook my head as I looked over at Dave. He had a nervous smile. Why did he have a smile? I was panicking. I heard gunshots up ahead and saw people starting to go down, causing a bigger panic. No way were we that close to battle already... we can not be front lines... I sighed and shook my head before feeling a reassuring hand on my shoulder. I looked over at Dave who gave me a soft smile that somehow calmed me down. I felt a small smile on my own face as I returned my focus to battle, the whole thing just happening. I was calm until the bullets cut through the people ahead of me and started zooming past me. My muscles tensed up and I started to panic. Before I knew it, I was tackled to the ground and when I regained focus, I saw that Dave had saved me as the guy behind me collapsed. It seemed like slow motion. Before I could say anything, he leaned down and whispered in my ear.
"Play dead." His voice sent a chill down my neck or maybe it was the fact that he was extremely close and I could feel his breath. Soon the gunshots quieted down and Dave silently looked around, realizing we had taken out their front line and was retreating back to the vehicle. Dave got up and pulled me up as well, wiping my face slightly, sending a small pain through my cheek. "You got cut."
"I-I did? I never e-even noticed." Dammit! Stop stuttering... but he was so close... My gaze shifted to the side of Dave as I saw something move. I lifted the gun and shot the enemy that had planned on taking out Dave. My movement of the gun made him jump and nearly panic until he saw that I had saved his life. We quickly started to go after the others and sat together on the bus. He stayed silent for a moment before looking at me.
"You saved my life. Thank you. Guess God decided it wasn't my time." God? Oh no... he is a Christian. Does that mean if he finds out I am gay that he will call me a sin and hate me. He will regret saving me and he will tell all the others. I should just go back. I have the suitcase. I could go home... A hand moving in front of my face snapped me out of my trance. "You there Klaus?"
"Oh... huh... what?" I shook my head. "Just thinking about things sorry... I wanted to thank you for saving me as well and when you were in danger I figured I would return the favor." He smiled at my response.
"Well I don't allow new soldiers to die on their first day." Right. Of course he would do this for anyone. "Anyway. The whole group is going out to have some drinks. Would you like to join?"
"Oh hell yeah. I could use a drink." He gave me a slight look before laughing.
"Glad to see you are excited."
