Chapter 4: Aftermath
"Leone. Can you see the target?"
"No, I can't see him at all. Where is he?"
Akame and Leone had infiltrated the pleasure house in which the oil dealer, Gamal, or their target, was currently staying. The plan was to wait for him to show his ugly mug and ambush him from the shadows as soon as he leaves his room for god knows why. Akame would then finish him off with her sword as Leone held him down.
At least, that is the plan, if Gamal would have shown up by now. The assassins have been in position for over two hours, and nobody has appeared yet. Where is he?
"Akame, I know we're on a job right now, but don't you think that we've been waiting here long enough?" Leone whispered, her animal ears out. No matter what she tried to do, she couldn't find him. What is he doing right now?
"We can't return until the mission has been completed. We'll have to wait here as long as needed." Akame responded in monotone, grabbing the hilt of her katana.
Suddenly, the assassins heard a pair of wobbly, slow footsteps. Whether it was the target was unknown, as the entire place reeked of alcohol, drugs, and sex. As such, Leone couldn't tell who was approaching with scent, and wobbly footsteps didn't offer much either. It could be anyone, probably some drunk soul passing through.
When the shadow of the figure became visible, it appeared to be a short, overweight man, hunched over, unable to stay up on his feet.
"Wait, that's Gamal! The target is coming!" Leone hissed, preparing to jump down. Akame unsheathed her katana, prepared to go for the kill.
"Must...Atone...For my sins..." Gamal muttered, his voice burbling. This confused the two assassins. What was he talking about?
"They're close...My salvation..." Salvation?
"Night Raid...Must kill me..."
The assassins had their eyes wide. Even the usually expressionless Akame was in shock.
"Akame? What do we do? I've never seen anything like this! A target? Begging for us to kill him? Salvation?" Leone questioned, watching as Gamal made disgusting sounding sobs, begging for forgiveness.
"Eliminate...the target. That's our mission, regardless of the circumstances." Akame stated, but she sounded unsure.
When the two jumped around, Gamal swung towards the sound of their feet touching the ground. Normally, he wouldn't be able to hear it, but it was almost as if his senses were heightened in his current state of mind. The oil dealer stared at the two for a little, before he burst into tears upon seeing Akame.
"Oh...Thank God! You've come!" Gamal cried out, once again catching the assassins off guard. The oil dealer moved closer, still sobbing. He got on his knees, putting his arms behind his back and placing his forehead on the floor, before crying out, "I offer my head to you! Please, make me pay for my sins and let me die!"
The assassins were caught off guard once again. Who could blame them? Not once has a target ever came up to them, begging to kill them. Literally.
Except...For Aria.
"The hell are you talking about?" Leone muttered, before shaking her head, her expression becoming cold. "Do it, Akame."
Akame stared at Gamal blankly, before walking to the oil dealer, and lightly stabbing him in his back with her strange sword. Gamal twitched, before his entire body dropped to the ground, cold and lifeless. All from a small stab wound.
"...Mission complete. Let's report back to HQ. Boss will need to know what happened here." Akame muttered, swiping the blood off her weapon and sheathing the blade. As the assassins began to make their escape, while also reflecting on what just happened, Leone looked back at Gamal's unmoving body.
"Let's hope Tatsumi isn't encountering any problems..." Leone muttered.
//Elsewhere\\
Tatsumi was dressed in a white coat to cover his face, just in case he would need to in the future as an assassin. According to the mission briefing, Ogre usually hangs around inside a pub in Main Street of the capitol, drinking. He usually comes out at this time.
Except...
He hasn't come out yet.
"How much liquor can he hold?!" Tatsumi asked himself, confused. Despite how laid back he seems, Ogre is one for schedule, coming out of the pub at this time. So why is he not outside? Tatsumi has been sitting in this alley for a while now, waiting for his chance.
"Did he pass out and finish my job himself?" Tatsumi wondered, stepping out from the alley. Screw it, he thought. He'll go in and bring him here himself.
As soon as Tatsumi took a step towards the bar, the door was slammed open, revealing Ogre with his head angled towards the ground. Trailing behind him was his platoon, scrambling and seemingly frantic. Confused, Tatsumi paid it no mind, walking to the seemingly drunk captain. Ogre seemed to wave his lackeys off, forcing them to leave. They seemed to send a confused glance, before shrugging it off. Tatsumi saw his chance, and decided to take it. Approaching Ogre with his hood up, Tatsumi quickly went over the plan he made. He would ask Ogre to come with him to the alley to get him alone, plead to join the army, then assassinate him. Easy enough.
"Excuse me, Ogre-sama." Tatsumi started, catching the "drunk" captain's attention. He didn't lift his head, only tilting his head at him slightly.
"...yes?" Ogre muttered, not taking his eyes off the ground. Tatsumi paid no mind to it.
"There's something I wish to ask of you. I would prefer if we found something more private, however." Tatsumi asked, grinning. Ogre didn't say anything, before nodding slightly.
When Tatsumi lead the captain to the alley he was originally waiting, he mentally celebrated, happy that everything was going smoothly. Preparing himself, Tatsumi immediately dropped to his knees, bowing to the captain.
"OGRE-SAMA! I BEG OF YOU! PLEASE LET ME INTO THE CAPITAL GARRISON! I NEED MONEY TO SEND TO MY HOME IN THE COUNTRY!" Tatsumi begged, fake tears streaming down his face. A surprisingly good show of patheticness...
Tatsumi remained with his head angled towards the floor, waiting for Ogre to say something. With how Tatsumi imagined it, Ogre would probably be dismissive, turning his back and giving him the opening he needed. All that would be left was to go back to HQ and report, finally earning Akame's respect! Maybe he could also convince Ren to help the cause as well.
"...Tell me...Are you with Night Raid?"
Tatsumi's blood ran cold, and his eyes widened. How did he figure it out?! Looking up, Tatsumi noticed that Ogre had not lifted his head from the ground once. What was he doing?
"...You are an assassin from Night Raid. Though, I've never seen an assassin beg so pathetically." Ogre noted, still looking at the ground.
"(I feel offended...)" Tatsumi thought to himself, before grabbing his sword and pointing it at Ogre. "Whether you know it or not, I will end your cruelty of the people, Ogre!"
"...Do it then. Stab me in the heart." Ogre muttered, taking his sword out of its sheathe and throwing it away from him. The captain spreed his arms, causing Tatsumi's eyes to widen in shock and confusion.
"...Is this some kind of trick, Ogre! Know that you won't receive mercy!" Tatsumi declared, suddenly getting nervous. This is just like when he had to defend the base. He hesitated to kill someone when they pulled something similar, and it was happening again. He can't make the same mistake again. but...Is this really how a proud captain acts? He even threw his sword away! Tatsumi couldn't see other weapons on the captain either.
"...What are you waiting for? Kill me. Let me repent and burn for my sins." Ogre growled, before lifting his face. What shocked Tatsumi more than anything was the fact that his only eye was leaking tears, his face only spelling remorse. "COME ON! KILL ME! LET JUDGMENT STRIKE ME WITH YOUR BLADE! ALL OF MY CRIMES CAN NEVER BE FIXED! DO IT! I'VE RELEASED MY SCAPEGOATS, AND ALL THAT'S LEFT IS FOR NIGHT RAID TO KILL ME! KILL ME, BOY!"
Ogre continued to scream, tears leaking from his face. Tatsumi began to shake, before suddenly rushing towards him and stabbed him in the chest, right where his heart is. A spurt of blood erupted from the wound and Ogre's mouth, before he dropped to the floor, lifeless and tears running down his face. Tatsumi tentatively walked to the fallen captain he had murdered, and yanked his sword from his chest.
"(This happened again...Just like with that guy...And with Aria...)" Tatsumi thought to himself, looking at his bloodstained gloves, which were shaking.
"(Is what I'm doing...justified?)"
. . .
"So the target was eliminated?"
"Yes. All that's left is Tatsumi."
I listened in as I washed the dishes, silently smiling to myself. I've made many discoveries last night. For one, I've found entering Mementos conception of time is actually slower than back in Shibuya. Time actually stops in reality when I enter Mementos, allowing me to enter the Metaverse without worry of being caught. It comes with risk, however. Wherever I exit the Metaverse is where I end up in reality. For example, if I enter the Metaverse in Night Raid's base, then go to an alley in mementos and exit from there, I'll end up in an alley in reality instead of back in the base. This can help me travel to places without being detected, basically teleportation. very helpful. I'll need to be careful of how I return, however, since if people are around me when I enter, and I return not looking the same, I'll arouse suspicion, and in the position I'm in, suspicion is the last thing I need. This is almost as stressful as going to public places with Futaba...
Akame and Leone had returned from their mission of murdering Gamal, but they seemed bothered. I wonder, did it happen?
"Hm? Is something wrong, you two? You look troubled." Najenda noted, making the two assassins look away.
"...We encountered something interesting during the job." Akame started. Najenda raised her eyebrow.
"Did something happen? Were you spotted?" Najenda asked, crossing her legs from where she was sitting. Leone pulled her scarf up, before sighing.
"No...We did the job without being detected. The problem was Gamal." Leone explained. Najenda leaned in to listen, as I stopped washing the dishes to listen in.
"The infiltration went smoothly. No alarms were raised. We waited for Gamal to come out of his room, just according to the plan. However, he didn't come for a long time. We thought that something was up, when we heard footsteps approach us. When we looked to see who it was, it was Gamal." Leone continued, as Najenda listened intently. "He was...strange. Muttering about atoning for his sins."
Najenda's eye widened in shock. I smiled silently. The change of heart occurred, even though he died in the end. There's nothing I can do about it, and it may seem pointless, but trust me. It's worth it.
"Atonement? Strange...Anything else?" Najenda pondered, resting her chin on her hands.
"When we went to finish him, he heard us, and turned around. Then he started crying, begging for us to kill him, saying that Night Raid was the only way for him to pay for our sins, and had us kill him without resistance." Akame continued, staring at her sheathed sword. It was silent, as Akame and Leone reflected on the past events, while Najenda simply sighed, thinking. It stayed like that for a little, the only sound being me washing the dishes and Morgana's occasional meow.
We soon heard footsteps, turning our attention to the door. Silently, Tatsumi walked in, conflict on his face. We all looked at him curiously.
"Ah! You're back, Tatsumi. How did the mission go?" Najenda asked.
"...The mission was a success." Tatsumi replied, still looking bothered. If the change of heart happened in Ogre in a similar way to Gamal, then he probably had to deal with Ogre begging to kill him. From what Najenda and Lubbock told me what happened when Tatsumi was sent to dispose of the intruders, he doesn't have a good experience killing people who beg to not be killed or be killed. Wait, now that I think about it, Ogre is the first person he's actually killed. I wonder how this will affect him...
"Oh! You took down a powerful enemy such as Ogre without a scratch, from what I can see! Very impressive!" Najenda praised, smiling.
Now, had the change of heart not occurred, Tatsumi would probably be confident, bragging about how his mission went to Akame. This is what I can pick up about his character, and that was what he was doing in the first place. But that's not the case, with Tatsumi's expression as proof.
"Yeah..." Tatsumi muttered, his gaze distant. Leone noticed, and asked what was up. Tatsumi was silent before he started with, "The mission...wasn't as smooth as you think."
"Huh? What do you mean?" Leone asked, crossing her arms beneath her bust. I looked to Akame, noticing her eyes become shadowed by her hair. She quietly strode to Tatsumi, who was distracted before...
Why is she yanking his shirt off?!
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Tatsumi screamed, snapping out of his state and blushing profusely. Akame's face remained blank. Before gesturing at Leone and Najenda. The blonde smirked cheekily while Najenda ran up and started undoing Tatsumi's belt. Am...Am I witnessing reverse rape? Akame held Tatsumi's hands above his head as Najenda and Leone yanked Tatsumi's pants down.
"Akira...Shouldn't we do something?"
"Nah, he's got this. Besides, I don't think the police would be very helpful in this place..."
"...That's fair."
"NOOOOO!" Tatsumi shrieked, crossing his hands over his chest like a girl. Calm down. If I can kill a God, take a bath with a bunch of old men and chug questionable chemicals with a goth nurse, you can handle a couple girls stripping you.
Akame stared at Tatsumi, before sighing in relief.
"Oh, good... From the way you said it, I had thought that you had gotten injured. I've seen too many of my comrades die from injuries they didn't report for the sake of pride. I'm glad that you're unharmed." Akame smiled, her usual monotone face gone. I felt my mask fall from my face as my jaw dropped a little. In a hurry, I grabbed my mask, and put it back on, making sure nobody saw. Dammit...Such a beautiful smile...
"Mewhehehe..." Morgana chuckled, making me blush bright red.
"Shut it, Morgana..." I muttered, thankful that my mask covers the upper half of my face. Geez, I've made a lot of friends with girls, but I can't handle a smile on a girl I barely interact with. For God's sake, I've even dealt with Makoto grasping on to me in fear and not even batting an eyelash.
"Wait, that's not what this is about!" Tatsumi cried out, hastily putting his clothes back on, regaining our attention.
"Oh? What was it then?" Najenda asked, tilting her head. The embarrassment dissipated from Tatsumi's face, turning back into concern and conflict.
"...It happened again. Ogre was begging for his life. Or rather, begging me to end it....Just like Aria." Tatsumi muttered, looking at the palms of his hands. The assassins eyes widened as I stopped washing the dishes, looking at Morgana, who smirked.
"All targets have had a change of heart. Good job, Joker!" Morgana congratulated me ad I gave him a silent thumbs up.
"This can't be coincidence..." Najenda muttered, putting her fingers to her chin.
"Is something wrong?" Tatsumi asked, confused.
"Leone and Akame had something similar happen to them with Gamal. It's strange...it's almost like...they had a change of heart." Najenda explained, closing her eye. I smirked. She couldn't be any closer to the truth.
"Who said you could stop washing the dishes?" Akame asked, making me turn around. I had sensed her, but I'm still a little nervous from earlier. Sighing, I began to continue my job as staff of the assassins
//Time Skip by Akira Trying to Charge his Phone\\
"Are you sure walking around in the open like this is smart?" Tatsumi asked, trailing behind the pink haired shortie herself, Mine.
"Yeah, but that's not the case with me. The ones who would be recognized at first glance would be Akame, Boss, Bulat, and Sheele." Mine explained. But...
"Don't you stick out like a sore thumb?" I asked.
"Huh? What do you mean?" Mine asked.
"Well..."
