SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - AUGUST 5, 1941

"Don't tell me you forgot we were going flying today."
"Ahh!" I awoke with a start, falling out of my bed in a bundle of blankets and sheets.
Raucous laughter resounded from my bedroom doorway as I clawed my way out to stand up. I pulled the covers away and threw them back on my bed as I faced a bent over and wheezing Edward Heffron. I shot him a glare and turned away to make my bed.
"Eddie, you'll be the death of me, I swear it!" I giggled. "Let me get dressed and I'll meet you at my car."
I placed a kiss on his cheek and ruffled his hair.
"One question first." he said, stepping in between me and my bathroom door.
"What's up, Eddie?" I raised an eyebrow at him as I leant back against the wall.
"Be my girl?" he bit his lip nervously and looked into my eyes.
"Absolutely." I smiled and kissed his cheek.
"Here, you can wear my class ring." he smiled triumphantly and slipped it onto my ring finger. "A perfect fit, too." he smiled. "Now hurry up! You're as slow as molasses."
I giggled and closed the bedroom door, moving over to my closet to choose my clothing for the day's activities. I had promised Eddie days ago that I'd take him up in my Lockheed Electra and he's been excited ever since. I've been flying since I was young and got my pilot's license at 14. Just recently my papa brought me a brand new plane, almost the same as Amelia Earhart's. My Lockheed Electra was lovingly dubbed Irish Philly. Eddie had called me that since we were young, it was my call sign at the airfield and fit my aircraft perfectly. I grabbed my jacket from its hook and the gear bag I kept my scarf and hat in. I jogged out to the living room and said goodbye to my papa before running to the car. Ed shot to his feet when I bounded out the door to the car. In a fit of giggles, I threw myself into his arms and hugged him tightly.
"Woah, woah woah! Where's the fire, eh?" he chuckled, looking down at me.
His accent comes out a whole bunch sometimes and it surely melts my heart.
"You missed me that much, huh Philly?" he kissed my forehead.
"I just love you, is all."
"I love you too!" he smiled wide

The whole drive to the airfield outside the city, Ed and I laughed and giggled, sang along to music on the radio and talked a lot about what he was doing for work. On the other hand, I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do.
"I think I might go to college in the spring? I want to keep being a pilot for now. I love flying." I smiled as I opened the hangar to reveal my gleaming Lockheed Electra.
I got Ed outfitted in his gear and in the passenger seat in record time. Soon we were taxiing on the runway and I switched on my com to communicate with the tower.
"Oh, this part is so cool!" whispered Ed.
"Tower, Irish Philly requesting clearance for takeoff on runway three."
Irish Philly, you are cleared for takeoff on runway three. Be safe, Meg.
You got it, Mac.
Ed and I had a pleasant flight that morning and when we landed, demanded he take pictures of me with my plane. We even got Mac to take pictures of us. When we got back to town, we stopped off at a diner for a milkshake before looking in shops downtown.

BABE'S POV
"Did you read in the paper that FDR is meeting with Churchill?" she asked.
"No, I didn't. What's going on? You've always been better at understanding this stuff than I have." I replied, opening the door to the department store she wanted to look around.
I watched her flounce around the store, browsing each rack. The way her bright red hair bounced and shone in the sunlight made me fall deeper in love with her. She looked back at me with her sparkling green eyes and smiled at me.
"Edward Heffron, you're plenty smart! Anyway, they're supposed to address concerns between the US and Britain. With Mr. Hitler across the pond, I don't like what's happening. There's gonna be war soon, mark my words." she frowned.
"Hey, Philly. It'll be okay." I kissed her cheek. "Find anything you like?"
"A couple blouses and a locket. I'll come back for the locket another time, though."
I squeezed her hand and brought her over to the cashiers. We paid for her things and left to walk back to the car. The whole way home Maggie was silent.
"What's eating at you, huh?" I asked as we pulled into her driveway.
"Promise that if you fight in a war you'll come home?" she whispered.
"I promise, Maggie."
