CAMP MACKALL, NORTH CAROLINA - MARCH 1943
The second I stepped out of the car I was greeted by Captain Sobel.
"Sir." I saluted and stood at attention.
"Congratulations on your wedding. Now, there's paperwork waiting for you on your desk. I want it finished in forty-eight hours along with the guard rotations for the next month and a half." he ordered.
"Yes sir. Right away, sir." I saluted once again as he dismissed me.
I watched him stride back down the road towards the admin building. That's where I'll be spending my life for the next few days. Groaning, I got my bags upstairs and disposed of my old OD's, reaching into a delivered box of fresh ones that bore my new surname. Heffron. I smiled to myself, twirling my wedding ring on my finger as I did so.
"So, how does it feel to be a married woman?" said Lewis, busting in the door. Dick followed closely behind him.
"It's good to see you fellas again, although I'd appreciate a knock next time. To answer your question, I rather enjoy it." I smiled wide. "Eddie's probably enlisted already. He wants to be a paratrooper."
"Woah now, both Heffrons are paratroopers?" said Lewis. "How do you feel about that?"
I sighed and sat down on my bed, withdrawing a wedding picture and setting it up on my bedside table.
"I'm nervous, especially since I don't know what theater he's going to be sent to. Do you know what his wedding gift to me was? A house! He's been saving all of his wages for months, his inheritance from his grandmother and grandfather, and all the odd jobs he did and he bought us a house! We don't even have a mortgage to pay!" I smiled wide again, reaching into my satchel to show them all the pictures.
I looked out the window at the men who were returning from rifle practice.
"Time to go say hello to the men. They've been wondering about their favorite Lieutenant." said Lewis, tossing me my garrison cap and pushing me down the stairs and out the door.
I laughed at a joke Winters cracked and that's when the men finally realized I was back.
"Lieutenant Whelan!" shouted Luz.
They all crowded around me, shouting congratulations and handing out wedding gifts they had bought when they had finally been allowed a weekend pass.
"Sobel gave you guys weekend passes and I wasn't even here to see it! Thank you guys. It's good to be back."
"We missed you, Lieutenant Whelan." said Liebgott.
"Lieutenant Heffron now, Liebgott." I winked at him and sent the gifts back to my quarters with Lewis.
It was time to start on the mountain of paperwork Sobel had assigned to me. It wasn't something that I minded, in fact, sometimes I even enjoyed paperwork. I walked into my office only to find a mountain the size of my head waiting for me. Grumbling, I slung my jacket over the back of my chair and got to work. With any luck I'd get this finished and ready in less than the allotted time. Doing the guard rotations wasn't hard, but it was definitely time consuming. The men were staying on their usual rotations for the most part while I added in newcomers that were transferred here. The reports for things that happened when I wasn't even here are what bothered me. I sighed, putting them in a separate stack to send to Winters or Lewis.
I placed a wedding picture of Eddie and I up on my desk and another up on my bedside table later that day. I sighed, running my fingers lightly over the picture. I missed Eddie a whole lot, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't scared. I was scared he would be sent to Japan. I was scared he wouldn't be in the 101st. All the 'what ifs' swarmed my mind and I couldn't get them out. Being without Eddie in the early days of our marriage is going to be really hard, and I can only imagine what he must feel like. Sighing, I finally laid down to rest after I finished the paperwork and sent it off with SGT Evans.
