Finch and I head out to the Cornucopia, keeping an eye out for any tributes along the way.
"So what if we're separated?" Finch asks.
"Run straight back to the cave, I'll meet you there." I remark, knife in hand.
We get to the Cornucopia and I instantly spot the table with 2 large bags marked 2 and 11, 2 medium sized bags marked 4 and 5 and one small bag marked 12. Wonder what the others need? Just as planned, I signal for Finch to quickly run and watch her dart straight for the table and scoop up our bags and disappear into the forest. Right after, I see the girl from 12 run straight for the bags, only to have a knife thrown at her by Clove. Cato must be nearby, I can't let him see me. I crouch down into a bush an return my attention to the fight between the 2 girls, keeping my hand on my knife.
The girl from 12 blocks Clove's knife and then shoots an arrow into Clove's arm, only for Clove to rip it out of her arm and grunt and then charging at and pinning down her opponent. I keep my eyes peeled for any of the boys and move to a closer spot so I can hear them.
"...District 12? Still hanging on?" Clove says, smirking sinisterly.
Trying to throw her off and failing, the girl responds. "He's out now right now. Hunting Cato. Peeta!" she yells only to have Clove cover her mouth and look around.
Clove takes out a knife, "Liar. He's dead. Cato knows where he cut him. You've probably got him up in some tree while you try to keep his heartbeat going. What's in the pretty little backpack? Medicine for Lover boy?Too bad he'll never get it."
I could run out right now and take them both out, leaving Cato, Finch, Peeta, the boy from 11, and me. I decide against it and watch as Clove continues to threaten the girl from 12.
"I promised Cato that if he let me have you, I'd give everyone a show." She says, as the girl from 12 struggles to throw Clove off of her. "Forget it, District twelve. We're going to kill you. Just like we did your pathetic, useless little ally. What's her name? Rue? Well, first Rue, then you, and I think we'll let nature take care of that little Lover Boy of yours. Sound good? Good. Now, where to start? I think you won't have any use of your lips anymore. Want to blow one last kiss to Lover boy?"
I almost laugh and give myself away when the girl from 12 spits in Clove's face and watch Clove wipe it off in disgust. Defiant to the end I see.
"All right then. Let's get started." Clove gloats as she picks out a wicked looking knife from her vest and begins carving in around her opponent's face.
I failed to notice the boy from 11 standing a few feet from me and watch as he sprints towards Clove and easily lifts her off her victim before she can finish her mission. the girl sits up and watches the boy pin Clove to the Cornucopia.
"What did you do to that little girl? You killed her?" He asks threateningly.
Clove, visibly shaken, stammers her words. "No! No, it wasn't me!"
I should really go help her. I stay on the ground then remember the Bloodbath and who Zale's killer is. I forcibly grip the knife in my hand and soon feel a sharp pain in my palm and realize that I was holding the blade instead of the handle. Anger, resentment, and guilt begin to build up as I struggle to stay down.
"You said her name. I heard you. You killed her! You cut her up like you were do this girl?"
The boy angrily remarks, gesturing to the girl on the floor.Clove uselessly tries to explain herself and stammers, "No! No, I- I- Cato! Cato!" she yells as the boy slams her against the Cornucopia several times then throws her aside like a ragdoll.
"Clove!!" Cato's voice calls out.
The boy faces the girl and gives her a look of confusion and gratitude. "What did she mean about Rue being your ally?"
We teamed up and blew up the supplies. I tried to save her, I really did. But then, the boy from District one came along." She explains.
So Marvel killed her, which means that he was killed by her partner. I grip the knife even tighter and angrily stab the ground, imagining the helpless little girl being speared by Marvel.
"Clove!!" Cato's voice calls out once again, getting closer.
"And you killed him?" The boy asks.
The girl nods, "Yes. I killed him. I buried her in flowers and sang her to sleep."
At least she went out happy. I smile to myself, picturing that scene.
"To sleep?" He asks sadly.
Once again, she nods. "To death. I sang until she died. Your district... they sent me bread. You know what? Just- just do it fast, okay, Thresh?"
He shakes his head as he begins to back away. "This one time. Just this one time, I'll let you go."
"Clove!!" Cato's desperate voice calls, getting even closer.
"You better go, fire girl." Thresh says as he runs past Clove's corpse, just as the cannon fires, signaling Clove's death.
Without thinking I leap to my feet and run after Thresh, making sure not to lose him just as I see Cato enter the clearing and run over to Clove.
"Marin?" Cato says as I ignore his voice with only one thought in my head...kill the guy who killed my partner.
You're not getting away, and I'll be damned if I let you enter that field. Thresh notices me and tries to maneuver around several trees as I start throwing my knives at him. He dodges them and I almost lose him as I grab another one. He's faster than me, but I'm more agile and am able to begin to close the distance as briefly see his increasingly annoyed face as if he's thinking about why I'm so dead set on following him. I shake it off as I forcibly throw another knife and watch as it embeds itself into the back of his skull, instantly followed by a cannon.
